Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 29 I had decided to have a true rest day after several days of mountain riding. I headed down to breakfast at 9am where I caught up with Bill and Joan. They were going to have a low key day as well so we decided to catch up at 11am and have a look around town. Our guide suggested that we may wish to take the train to "Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe" http://www.raileurope.com/activit ies/jungfraujoch/index.html However, at 200 euro we decided that it was beyond our budget. I returned to my room and used the fast wifi to catch up on my blog and send emails. As arranged, I met Bill and Joan at 11am and we set off to see the town. the first barrage of shops we were presented with were watch shops from all of the iconic Swiss brands and some that I had never heard of. I was pleased to see that the design of my 40 year old IWC was not a great deal different than the current offering from this company. Next, as you would expect, we came to a row of chocolate shops and I kept my hands in my pockets and did not buy even a single piece. Switzerland is a very expensive country with prices for everything ridiculously high. a small can of Diet Coke cost 3 euro and a glass of beer 8 euro. The clear blue sky was filled with paragliders who had just jumped from the near by mountain. As we walked we came to a large grassed park near the centre of town. Most of the park was roped off and as we discovered this was the landing ground for the paragliders. We stopped and watched several land and at one stage there were 20 paragliders above us all zig zagging across the sky waiting for their turn to land. how they did not collide was beyond me. it was now lunch time so we found a Migros shopping centre and had lunch in the food court, but not before I tried to walk through a glass wall that I thought was an open door. This provided amusement to Bill and `Joan and a sore nose to me. After lunch I returned to my room for a siesta while Bill and Joan continued around town. We caught up again for dinner and decide that we would find somewhere cheap and have a light meal.We came across a small Chinese restaurant and decided we would give it a go. I ordered Tom Yum soup, sweet and sour chicken and a beer. Bill and Joan ordered a serve of spring rolls to share , beef soup, a beer and a small diet Coke. Shock horror this meal cost us 91 euro. So much for a cheap meal. Remind me not to visit Switzerland again unless I win lotto. With or stomachs full and our wallets empty we returned to our room.
