Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 12 I slept in to 9am this morning then wandered down to breakfast. The majority of our tour group had taken the rest day to travel to Auschwitz for a tour. I chose to have a restfull day doing some washing, sending emails, paying bills on line then wander into the Peoples Square to do some site seeing. After spending a couple of hours on the computer I wandered down stairs and had a Panini and latte for lunch. There was no sign of the group returning from Auschwitz, so I set out on the 25minute walk to the city centre. The weather looked threatening so I borrowed an umbrella from reception and set off. 5 minutes down the road the umbrella got put into service. I headed for the main square and a money changer as I would need some more Euros after tomorrows ride. Despite it being a work day the square was packed with people and the sidewalk bars and restaurants were well patronised. I browsed the shop windows all round the square and investigated several small streets leading off the square. All this walking is thirsty work so I stopped at a sidewalk cafe for a latte, pint of beer and a slice of apple pie. All enjoyed as I watched the horses and carriages parade past . The only negative comment I have about this city is the inability to get away from cigaret smoke. Everyone seems to have a cigaret in their hand even the younger generation. I saw some stunning Polish young ladies dressed to the nines and with a cigaret in their hand. I walked back to the hotel and found James, Steve and Olga in the small bar off reception. We chatted for a while and then moved to the restaurant for dinner. I followed my dinner with a coffee and sambuca then retired to my room to write my blog and watch Top Gear on TV.
