Dubai..
We arrived in Dubai around 9.30pm on Friday night the air was hot, the city was buzzing & boy we're we excited to get out of an airport! Within 2 minutes a guy had approached us asking if we needed a lift and being completely naive we agreed to an airport transfer only to find out later that it would set us back 180 dirhams ($47AU)... Not a backpacker friendly figure at all! I had red that our hotel was hard to find, it was set in the old Dubai Souk Markets on Dubai creek but we didn't expect to be driving around in circles for over an hour looking for it.. The hotel was modest very old school Dubai which is just what I wanted! The Dubai we see today is so over the top with flashy giant weird gadgets that I knew we needed something to give us a feel of what Dubai used be like.
Breakfast was served in the cafe with a choice of either omelette or pancake.. Of course Kael asks for both.... (Of. Course. He. Does.) The look of confusion on the waitress's face was priceless, omelette & pancakes!!?? Haha. After breaky we are ready to take on Dubai!!
First stop we head out of our hotel to the Old Dubai Souk markets nothing better to give you a feel for what Dubai used to be about! All the fragrant spices, fresh teas and trinkets made of copper, camel bone or paintings drawn with coffee. I really wanted to buy these cute copper egg cups to take home but Kael bursts my bubble @ $35 each these are not 'backpacker friendly' not to mention the lack of space in bag... Even 2 egg cups would struggle there way in :/
Second stop the Dubai Mall Aquarium & zoo.. WOW we were like 2 big kids in a candy store! We spend hours wandering around getting lost and finding things and loosing them again all the while wishing I could spend our holiday savings in Jimmy Choo or Prada and then we head to the Emirates Mall with the snow fields inside.. Who would of thought snow in the desert! But i am too scared to try skiing, there are so many people in there id probably end up with a broken leg.. Ill save that for winter in Europe! In the mall there are (burkas) everywhere! And may I say some very fashionable burkas too.. I start immediately wonder if Gucci or Chanel do their own burka range for the middle east....... Hmmm...?? And did I mention the other fabulous middle east beach fashion item, Burkinis!? Well hot diggety damn.. I need to get me one of them! NOT.
We head back to the Dubai mall to watch the fountains and have dinner & I'm in love! They are so cool.. Every half an hour the fountains put on a glorious choreographed show to music we watch 1,2,3 I could sit there all night!
Day 2 we are depressed because we realized we spent nearly our whole 'Dubai Budget' on day 1! Whoops! And Kael was desperate for one of the water parks..... (So desperate he was planning another trip to Dubai in his head if we didnt make it!) we decide to begin the day at the museum for some history & use the trains instead of taxis then go to wild wadi water park anyway ...and what a waste of money! 30 minute cues for a water slide!? Lazy river it is................ We managed 2 water slides (one of the was like 11 small ones so that's like 12 really... Ha.
Then we head to Jameriah beach! As always Australia you have spoilt us and it really doesn't compare! after a big day we head back to the Dubai mall to watch the fountains one last time before we leave!
Day 3 we are up @ 3.30am to pack & head to the airport London bound!! Our taxi picks us up and we pay a much friendlier figure of 50 dirhams ($13AU) and we realize just how ripped off we were! Haha.... I'm sure it won't be the last time.
Dubai was a whirlwind we could of spent another couple of days there easily although I'm not in a hurry to get back. One day I'm sure we will but for now, it's LONDON TIME! ;)
