We were to get up at 4 am for a very long journey from the river boat to a bus from the bus to a boat then the island. We were heading for turtle island.
We arrived 11ish white sand, blue see, sun, coral reefs and many fish. It was amazing, we snorkey for some time and sunbathed. It was so nice to relax after having such a busy time!
At night time we went to see a gallery with info about the turtles, they come to the same beach they were born to lay eggs, the chance of survival is very low and they are endangered species due to the number of predators and poaches who sell their eggs as medicine. Its so sad to think that people believe a turtle egg can make you more fertile!
We were then waiting for the "call" we were the first group and at 9pm it was our time. A mother had landed on the beach, dug her nest and was about to lay her eggs! we had the opportunity to see this (got pics of this too) the rangers to the eggs as the mother lay them to put in a hattchery to keep safe from poachers and preditors. In all she lay 128 eggs, 80% will hatch and almost none of them will make it to adult life.
We then set some hatchlings into the sea, they were so tiny, they ran into the sea and only one ran the wrong way up the beach! he had to be picked up and turned in the right direction! it was amazing to see! an experience we will never forget. Its so sad to think that barely any of these turtles will survive though!
Just an update on our legs! they still hurt a little but now we are mega sunburnt!
