After a 6hr non-stop bus ride from the Thailand border to Bangkok, I was literally bursting for a pee. The bus driver was a maniac, but at least he got us there quickly. In hind sight a small blessing in disguise. We arrived back in Bangkok, which felt very familiar after the time that I had spent there before. We said goodbye to Krista & some of the tour group members and then met our new tour guide Louise and new tour members for the Bangkok to Singapore stretch. We had 2 good nights out and the funniest evening was sitting having drinks in an old petrol station. It’s weird drinking beers on a petrol forecourt. There were a lot of sad goodbyes as people headed off in different directions. We took an early bus the next morning to a floating market. It was a little too much of a tourist trap for me and did not enjoy the experience. We then headed off to Kanchanaburi which is infamous for its proximity to the “Death Railway” and Bridge over the river Kwai. The railway was constructed by POW’s and Asian laborers during WWII. We had a ride on the Death Railway, visited the Death Museum, walked on the bridge over the river Kwai & the visited the war cemeteries of the POW’s that died during the period. The museum provided a good insight into the lives of the POW’s and the conditions that they had to work under and the fact that they were only fed 100g of rice a day. That night before we took our overnight train to Krabi we went to a night market. It was great to be so immersed in the local culture. We had a meal at one of the market stalls and then I decided that I needed to try their fried bugs. I got a back of crickets, maggots, worms & locusts. They spray chili oil on them and then put salt & pepper in as well. Well I must say they make a tasty bar snack, they look a lot worse than they taste. Its just a strong protein taste. So then we were off on the overnight train to Krabi.
