Farewell to Kathmandu while sitting on a 7 hour bus to Pohkarra I was reflecting on the time in Kathmandu. We were all sad to be leaving but excited to be somewhere new and be closer to the mountains. Our time in Kathmandu has definately been memorable, we made lots of great friends and shared some great times.
Our time with the Nepal Volunteers Council was great, everyone that worked there was very friendly and helpful and wanted nothing more than to make sure we had the best of time and were safe and free of any problems. Keshab, I know you are reading this and thank you very much, we will be thinking of you and missing you. You Know?
The grade eight kids I taught were amazing, I had a lot more fun teaching them then I thought I would. The kids were a blast, I even got a couple poems from one girl and flowers from all of the girls and a few of the boys. I made them all do a homework assignment which I asked them to write 70 words on what they want to do when they were older, or their aim in life. I was blown away by the responses I got which were well written and in some cases well over 70 words. Lots wanted to be teachers and find ways to improve the education system and make those less fortunate have a chance to learn and get a good education. It was heart warming how they would write about not wanting to make a lot of money and just make a difference. I enjoyed the short time I had with the kids and they will be in my memories forever.
We had a weekend off without teaching due to lots of holidays so we decided to get out of Kathmandu for the night and do a overnight trek. We got a guide and drove out an hour outside of Kathmandu then hiked for about 3 hours (12 kilometers) to a lodge in Nagarkot 7,200 feet up. The hike mostly followed the road up the mountain but the views were nothing short of spectacular. It was very relaxing to be away from the honking, dogs barking or fighting and early morning bells thats we were getting used to and annoyed with in the city. We spent the evening sitting outside just writing and catching up on all of our journals while listening to music. We took a van down the next day since we weren't given the option of hiking down, which made no since but that's okay. The drive was quite the experience speeding down a narrow road where you can't see around the corners and there is barely enough room for two vehicles. Oh and the driver had some great music consisting of Celine Dion, some traditional Nepali music and Aqua (Barbie Girl was entertaining the first time, not so much the second, or third).
We spent our last few nights saying good by to some of our friends we made in Swayambu. They treated us to an amazing tibetan dinner with an endless jug and glasses constantly full of homemade rice wine. Needless to say many laughs were shared that night.
Kathmandu and all the people in it has been very open and inviting. Was a great place to come too and I hope I will be back someday.
