We are taking a Shore Excursion "Highlights of Belfast" today at 0830am The ship departs at 700pm, so we have a long day in port here.
Belfast means "mouth of the river". We had a whirlwind tour this morning, we went by the Titanic Museum, then headed to Belfast Castle, which was always a private residence. Very cool.
We went to the Peace Wall in the area of the protests, and I signed it in two places. We drove by McHughs Pub which was established in 1711. We went into the City Hall building, which was beautiful marble and lots of stained glass windows.
Then, off to Queen's College, established by Queen Victoria. The Botanical Gardens were right next door with a gorgeous glass Victorian greenhouse with a palm exhibit.
Off to the Parliamant Building on the hill, which was opened in 1932 by then-Prince of Wales, Edward (the abdicator).
We arrived back at the ship around 1245pm, so I decided to go online and get a pre-admission ticket to go back to the Titanic Museum, since the ship was launched from here on her fatal voyage in 1914. I have to take a taxi from the pier, and going by myself. The locals here have very strong accents, but surprisingly I could understand them. The museum was very, very nice. I listened to the narrative on a headset, as well reading a lot of the verbiage on the walls. It was very crowded and very hot, although it is only 66 degrees out. Drizzling and windy upon exit, but taxis are abundant. 7 pounds, 2 pence each way.
