The last three weeks have basically consisted of entertaining the kids on this island. The family have just built a small, twee house on the sea front and therefore activities were generally water based - jet-skiing (me the responsible adult of course), multiple boat trips, water parks, fishing, banana boating (in their own banana boat)...you name it we did it. There has been a constant flow of guests each week, including numerous kids but it has been a lot of fun. I was also lucky enough to be allowed a few days off to visit some friends interrailing through Split - it was my first sane moment back in the comfort of my own friends and, more importantly my own language!
A few unavoidable incidents...
1) the inevitable fall from the banana boat resulting in a bit of concussion/melodramatic child
2) Day 2: arrival of a new motor boat. As it was moored about 50m out at sea two people (the parents) had to go to retrieve it and motor it to the pier for the rest of us. M-L is cutting some prosciutto and badly cuts her thumb, rushes to the doctor and during stitching is told no swimming for 10 days...aren't they lucky I know how to work a boat, catch the mooring and sort the fenders, as they certainly didn't!
The kids were difficult, that is impossible to deny, the language barrier being the main problem I faced as German isn't my strong point, but I can now say that I can speak kid's German! Luckily the parents were on my side and helped out a lot. Rudolf (the little one) was a stereotypical chubby, blonde (with the essential pudding bowl haircut) little Austrian boy/brat who did all in his might to put me in the dirt, and at 28kg as a 3 year old was incredibly strong! Anyway, I survived the ordeal(s) and live to tell the tale. I have made a good friend in Marie-Louise, the mother with whom I went out partying on many occasions (!) and it was a good experience for me, Mummy hoping it has helped reduce my want for kids just yet!
Having had a long day of travelling involving nearly every form of transport including a long ferry crossing, I have arrived in Castello di Reschio, an enormous estate in Umbria where my best friend Madeleine is also working. I am the au pair for the grandchildren of Il Conte and La Contessa Bolza...we shall see where this takes me!
