We're finally on our way! Had a day in HongKong enroute to Thailand. Walked round the city seeing everything from mdern shopping malls to street markets, massive skyscrapers and spotless botanical gardens. Kids amazed by the massive buildings, they wouldn't like to live in one though - where would you play wondered Liam.
Spent three days in Bangkok. It wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be as far as traffic and people were concerned. Sure it was busy but not overwhemingly so, quite a bit of smog, constant noise and 35 degree heat meant our hotel was like a cool calm oasis whenever we went back there. We enjoyed riding in the tuk tuks round the city weaving in and out of traffic , ignoring re lights and one way streets but amazingly feeling reasonably safe - didn't see any accidents. Went on a canal trip which was a great way to see some of the life of the city. Saw hovels built on stilts without a lot of plumbing visible as well as mansions and elaborate temples. Kids were swimming in the filthy water and people were fishing. I didn't eat fish that night! Every house had washing sitting out on hangers - no washing lines and they all had plants and flowers in pots.
Bangkok had some massive shopping malls near us 3 huge buildings with 10 floors of shops you wonder how well they are doing at the moment.
We visited the Grand Palace and Wat Phrae Kaeo these are incredibly ornate we were all awestruck by the grandeur.
We flew up to Chiang Mai on the 4th and are enjoying being in a smaller city. Went to the Chiang Mai cultural centre that night and enjoyed a traditional northern Thai meal and were treated to about two hours of traditional dancing. Very colourful costumes Vanessa and Liam joined in one dance. Last night we went to the Sunday market masses of people with street performers, very colourful.
The children really seem to be absorbing and enjoying everything and coping well with the heat.
