Brenton Kovacs's Travels
9th
Our flight arrived into Seoul at 9.40pm. By the time we cleared immigration and customs it was close to 10.30pm. The train ride in to the city was another hour. Now we knew that once we exited the subway station it was only a few hundred metres to the building where we were staying. The only issue was it was minus 6c. This came as a big shock when we exited the station. We walked very briskly.
The apartment we booked is really nice and cosy. By the time we got to bed it was close to 1am.

We awake to a beautiful blue sky day, but it is still minus 6c outside. With extra clothes on we take a walk across the road to a very large shopping complex to get some groceries. The place is huge with some much on offer. I cannot recall ever being in such a huge supermarket, and with so many different products. What i did like was the amount of free samples available on the end of nearly ever aisle.
So after lunch we brave the cold and take a 2k walk into the city to do some exploring. First impressions of the city are very positive. It is super clean, and very quiet, hardly any road noise. It might be minus 6 still but the other problem is that it is windy, and this cuts right through you. So we make a few stops where ever we can to shop and warm up. The city is very modern and well laid out. People are very friendly, and there is no pushing or shoving anywhere. The Koreans are also very polite and helpful.
We came across a huge pedestrian only shopping area, which is full of every type of shop you can imagine. By late afternoon the place is packed with mobile stalls selling awesome smelling and tasty food. So far we both really like Seoul.

More great sunny but cold days. These days were spent wandering the streets and shops. Took the metro to Gangnam to see how the other half of the Koreans live. This is a very upmarket area. It was such a nice place to walk around. Very modern skyscrapers, so clean and so quiet. Plus there is a huge abundance of shops and mammoth malls. The metro system is also one of the best and easiest we have used around the world.

Today we did a bus tour to the North Korean border. We visited the DMZ (demilitarised zone) and the JSA ( joint security area). This meant a 1.5 hour bus ride to the border. Many security checks, passport checks. We got to see quite a bit as were allowed to visit the blue rooms that both north and south Korea share. So we got to step on North Korean soil and see the guards doing there stare off at each other. The Military police we with us all the time in case of an incident. Was very interesting and a little intimidating at times.
