Brenton Kovacs's Travels
22rd
Spent the morning riding the trams to various sights and shopping malls. I ended up on the Buda side around lunch time and after spending a short time in a shipping mall i felt a little hungry. I chose not to eat in the mall, so it was out onto the street for some local food.
Walking along the path i spotted a lot of people going into a building. So i followed an dto my surprise it is a huge indoor food market. Lots of fruit and vegetables, meats and pickles. So i make my way to the top floor where there are the food stalls.
Now this market is way off the tourist map, so there is no english menus at all. It is very busy with the locals as the food here is so much cheaper than on the Pest side. I managed to order chicken breast wrapped with bacon and stuffed with brocoli, served with rice. It was a big serve for a mere $3. Very tasty.
It is about zero outside but i can see patches of blue sky. So i make my way by the tram to the Castle District. What a magnificent place. The view from the Fishermans bastian is quite impressive. It fact the whole area here is impressive.
23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th
The last few days have been trying to fit in as a local. So i have stayed away from the tourist sites and walked the back streets. In a way it is far more interesting as the shops are not catering for the tourist, so you can see how the locals shop and live.
The weather has been on the chilly side. minus 10 at night and getting to minus 2 during the day. It has tried to snow, but only light snow fell. Most days have been overcast, but there was a glimpse of sun on Saturday and Sunday. Its amazing how much warmer you think you are when the sun shines on you.
I have enjoyed my extended stay. I thought i might get bored staying in one place for so long, but with so much to see and experience, it has not. Budapest has a lot going on in the way of major works on the parks around the city including a massive landscaping to the grounds of Parliament.
27th
Today it might get above zero. Its 8am and minus 8 degrees, so it will be a cold one today. I leave the apartment at 10am and it has warmed to minus 6. I take the number 2 tram that runs along the Danube, to the end of the line. Unfortunately the old number 2 tram is not heated. I wander around the suburbs to see the non-tourist part of Budapest. It really hasn't changed much form the city, maybe i need to go further out. Anyway i came across a Tesco hyper market. I have to look inside as it will be a nice place to warm up.
The place is empty, there would be more staff than customers. I grab some nice chinese food before heading back. I take the tram till the Grand Boulevard where i get off and will walk back along the Boulevard back to the apartment, about 5 kilometres. The street is nearly deserted which is odd because in the morning it was packed with people. Maybe they have had enough of the freezing temperature.
28th
My last day in Budapest and as i havent been for a walk on Margaret Island, this is where i will go. It is not so cold today, minus 2. I walk from the apartment and then access Margaret island from the bridge. There are quite a few people walking the island park. It is pretty for this time of the year, so it must be very pretty when all the trees are green and the flowers are blooming.
Now as i reach the end of the island, its about 2 kilometres long, i stop to take another picture only to drop the camera. I have dropped it once before in Iceland and it was ok. This time it is terminal. The lens has broken, and no longer works. I am still kicking myself as i only bought it a week before going away. So no more pictures
29th, I fly to Dubai and wont arrive till 9pm. Will have the next day in Dubai, and fly home at 2am on Friday. This will give me one full day in Dubai where i intend to visit the old Souk (markets).
So that brings another fantastic experience to an end, well only a temporary end as i have already started planning another trip. Cant wait!
