"Offle jim jam, rock or ball?" - Nicholas Coren
Before we begin writing today's blog, we must warn you that this could be our last. We know that we've stated this previously, but today we really mean it. Marc requested to stay in a motel that is as s**t on the inside as it looked on the outside - it is safe to say he can tick this off of his bucket list as its worse on the inside, and the outside looked bloody awful. Apparently, motels like this create 'stories' - f**k stories, we want to live another day! Nice one Marc!
12 hours earlier...
Leaving a little later than planned, we grabbed ourselves a Denny's breakfast, which included pancakes, and hit the road via Albuquerque. Chris got very excited and pointed out all the landmarks he could find that were included in the television series Breaking Bad - based in the same town, including the carwash where Mr White had his heart attack. Albuquerque was actually quite a modern city, and one we wish we were staying in at this present time.
Not a lot was seen during the day, we took a few detours, which allowed us to go off road a little and take some pictures: Nick and Chris took the opportunity to climb an old school windmill that looked like it was going to crumble, you know... safe and sensible!
Making our way down the road, with the canyons on either side of us, there was only one thing that could top off the drive... Bon Jovi's 'Wanted Dead or Alive'.
We passed through a number of ghost towns and headed towards the Continental Divide for a few pictures and to stretch our legs. There was a souvenir shop that contained produce created by the native Indians in the local area - this is where Chris took the opportunity to purchase a leather cowboy hat. Brokeback Mountain, eat your heart out!
We made our way over the state line into Arizona, home of the Grand Canyon. As we started to get excited, the end of the road wasn't far away! Downpours of rain seem to be making a habit on the last drive of the day, and once again Nick was behind the wheel. Recommended in our Route 66 guide, we pulled off the road and decided to take a trip into the Petrified Forest National Park. We can tell you, there is no forest. There are a lot of rocks, a few bushes and some different coloured sand. We did find an old rusty car dumped in the middle of the National Park, and took advantage of the photo opportunity.
Rocking up into the town of Holbrook, we had high expectations from what we read and what we were told by the nerdy park rangers. Unfortunately, the Wigwam Motel that we wanted to stay in was fully booked, as was the nice looking motel across the road. We looked around and there she stood, run down and with the name Economy Inn - we had to have it. This brings us to our current situation at 9.51pm having just eaten a s**t meal and learning that the really poor wifi doesn't even reach our room.
Upon check-in, we were comforted by the request of our ID, as a precaution in case the police showed up... erm, thanks?
It's okay, we've got it sorted: Marc stole a butter knife from the restaurant for protection and is guarding us by sleeping closest to the door. If the situation takes place where we get attacked by some of the bikers and rednecks downstairs, Marc will throw himself out the window and over the balcony, Nick will attempt to leave through the bathroom window (it's the size of his head), James will cry while huddling in the corner and Chris will bend over ready to take it, cowboy hat and all the trimmings ;)
As we get eaten alive by the bed bugs, we hope we'll be alive to post this at a location with wifi tomorrow. 6am departure, he we come...
