Our mission to find to lost city of the Inca's has been completed after an extrememely challenging 45km trek across the Andes and over 5 peaks, the second day requiring us to climb 1400m to 4200m. Bloody nackering and hence the lack of leg function for days following (simlilar to that after running the marathon) and a deep hatred for steps that is yet to fade. The porters were incredible, carrying all our clothes, food, tents, food tents, gas cylindars, tables and chairs, all wearing flip flops and running the trail in order to reach camp before us and have our tents and a meal prepared before we got there every evening. If anything was going to make us feel like fat lazy tourists it was this!
Our personal guide also meant that I know know more about the Inca history than I ever learnt in my whole life of history lessons. I've decided I want to be an Inca, they're too cool it's unreal! The best thing we learnt was that after they were invaded, they told the Spanish that those who had fled from the Inca Capital of Machu Picchu had taken all their gold into the Amazon with them. Hence, many of the Spanish attempted to uncover the "lost gold of the Incas" but none were successfull and most died. It is thought however that this may have actually been a scam brought about by the Incas to spite the Spanish. However, it is still unknown if the story os actually a myth. Another strong possibility is that the Inca's still exisit in the Jungle and are guarding the lost treasure and those who discover it are instantly killed. Who knows?!
