On Sunday, December 16th, headed up to Grenada, Nicaragua on the Tica Bus. The trip went really well - no chickens on the bus but a few odd things to point out:
Was told I needed to flag the bus down as it drove through Liberia - given a two hour window of when it will show up - actually wasn't too bad.
Customs at the Nicaragua border was interesting. We all had to push a button (similar to one on a game show) and if the stop light turned red you got searched and if it turned green you didn't - I got green! Also, another passenger (small older lady) was traveling with a washer, dresser and a kitchen counter with sink - all old and in seemingly very bad condition?
Once I arrived I moved in with my very nice host family - Los Ortega. Still trying to confirm their names but know they are very into music - one brother is a professional trumpet player in Germany and another is in a Salsa group in San Francisco. Very happy about my new home - should be perfect place to spend Christmas.
Haven't seen much of Grenada yet but already love it! Can't really explain it but it's different to Costa Rica. Very rich in culture and everywhere there are people talking or playing in the streets.
Monday was the first day at the new school - also a lot different - it is actually a home for 6(ish) disadvantaged boys and they use the money from the students to fund it. The school took us on a boat tour of the lake and the 300+ islands created by the nearby volcano. Most of the islands just have one giant houses on it - some owned by wealthy locals but most by foreigners. One tiny island was full of monkeys - guess the tour boats bring them enough food to survive. The best part was the bike ride through Grenada and around the lake to/from the boats. Also great that some of the boys from the school came with us - really proves kids are the same everywhere!
Today I'm working at a nearby orphanage teaching mathematics - should be interesting!
