Finished up a great week in Monteverde. Took a great trip to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve - a cloud forest is actually a rainforest with more humidity (100%). Saw a lot of interesting creatures including the Quetzal - rare bird to see and is supposed to bring good luck. My favorite was the tarantula - have never seen one in the wild.
Didn't have a traditional Turkey day (actually ate spaghetti on rice??) but that's OK - instead we took dance lessons at the school and then went out to practice in local bars - definitely different! Had a great time dancing with the locals - they are incredible dancers! Of course we had to practice Thur, Fri and Sat nights! Really became good friends with several other students - great group!!
On Saturday it was my host sister's birthday so we went out for ice cream and pizza - guess 8 year olds are the same everywhere!
Then Sunday I traveled back near San Jose and moved in with my new host family in San Joaquin. Mama Olga y Papa Victor, hijos: Karla (22) y Maria Jose (11). They live in a cluster of 3 houses with the grandparents, cousins, sisters etc - about 20 in total. Very social family! When I arrived everyone was sitting around drinking in the courtyard area and it was decorated for a baptism party. When I asked if we were going to the church for the ceremony they said no because they were bad Catholics and they just go to the fiesta part - so funny!!
Today I started class at the new campus. Miss my friends from last week but seems to be a good group here too - more interested in learning Spanish than having fun but probably better anyway. We went into the town and I finally registered for the Costa Rica marathon on Sunday 12/02! All of the information has been in Spanish so it has been tricky but I'm all set - only $14!
