After the trauma of Diving & the carnage that followed, I was really looking forward to chilling on some beautiful beaches & preparing ourselves for the half moon party in a few days time, but arriving on Koh Pangnan we were majorly disappointed. We stupidly headed to Hat Rin which is where the notorious full moon party is held & is basically like the West End of Ibiza, hideous. The place is full of Gap Year Students drinking buckets & the beach is full of tacky bars blaring out Eurotrance all day & night! Now I might sound like a boring old fart, but there are literally NO nice places here. We are staying in what can only be described as Halls of Residence with a swimming pool, the restaurant is like a common room & tonight there is an 18-30s style pool party!
After a day here we realised that we had to get out of this resort, so we decided to move to a different part of the island, this was before we discovered that a taxi would cost us 2000 baht (around 25 quid) - it is cheaper to fly to Bangkok than it is to move resorts! It's a total rip off here, the roads are so bad that you can either risk your life on a Motorbike or pay a fortune for a taxi, I'm sure there are nice beaches here, but its impossible to explore the Island independently, unless you have a death wish. MOst people who do rent out bikes end up with the legendary Koh Phagngan Tattoo - nasty scars, burnt legs or worse - I've just seen one of the Gap Years walk past with his entire face bandaged up. Not the kind of fun I want to be having! The only saving grace of Koh Phangan has been Magic Mountain, the resident Happy Shake manufacturer, so the last 2 nights we've climbed the Mountain & laughed at all the Bucket Kids getting pissed in the sea. We hate the place so much that we've controversially decided to sack off the full moon parties, if they are anything like what we've seen so far, then they really arent worth it! I really cant be bothered watching a load of paralyitic 18 year olds covered in Day Glo Paint, whilst a load of hippies get off their t*** listening to Psy-Trance! I must be getting old, cos I want out!
So we're escaping to Phi Phi tonight, in search off the perfect beach, it might not be in season, but they did film 'The Beach' here, so even in the rain it's gotta be better than Koh Phan Skank. Either way at least I can be safe in the knowledge that the Gap Years will be heading in the opposite direction towards the full moon!
