Yeah, yeah, yeah... we know it's been a while! Or actually, it's been ages..!
Life has been pretty busy on this side of the ocean, and also, we did not actually have any access to the internet while we were in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Which is why this entry is not happening until now, 6 days into our visit to San Francisco!
We took a Greyhound bus van San Diego to Vegas, which was... interesting... haha. It had to be experienced, of course, but the American bus system is not our favourite. 8 hours on a bus in the middle of the freaking desert is not something we will be trying again very soon! But we ended up chatting to some random guy from Belgium for most of the drive and we ended the trip with a taxi ride from the bus station right across the city to our hotel, where we not only found an air conditioned room with two double beds, but also a pool outside our door. Not too shabby!!
We were shattered from the journey, but clearly had no time to rest. Met up with two guys we'd met in the San Diego hostel who'd gone to Vegas the day before and spent the night walking around the hotels and casino's on the Strip and ended the night with 1 dollar frozen Margaritas, which might actually be unbeatable!
In the spirit of "we'll sleep when we're dead", we got up early the next morning to be picked up at 7.30 for a day trip to the Grand Canyon... when I say day trip, I mean a full day of being on a bus... again. It took so long to get there and obviously the drive back was even worse, but we got to see some very beautiful places, like Bolder City, the Hooverdam, the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and even a showing of The Harvey Girls on the way up! Such an exhausting day, but definitely worth it.
The rest of our days in Vegas were mostly spent wandering around the Strip for hours and hours at a time, it's so much bigger than we'd ever imagined and all the famous places aren't even on it! Palms is miles away... so is Hard Rock... I mean, has Hollywood been lying to us for all those years?! Who'd have thought, right? But we did make it to the Hard Rock on the night of the 4th of July (basically everyone wears American flags, watches fireworks and gets hammered), after we met some random guy while we were shopping (shocking!) who got us guest listed for Body English, the night club at the Hard Rock. Apparently one of the coolest parties in town, but kinda lost on us... haha. A lot of fun to walk around for a bit and watch all the wannabe people who were clearly not pulling it off, but then it got boring and we left within half an hour. Oh well!
So, overall Vegas was a pretty insane experience. You can't live during the day, cos it's too hot outside to even leave your hotel room / pool. During the night you can walk around and watch all the crazy gambling addicts at work, but there's not much else to do. We stayed away from the gambling. Too dangerous, quite frankly! It's always busy everywhere, never seen so many people ever. There's music everywhere all the time, the lights drive you mental after about a day and no one apparently ever shuts up, because the noise over the music is even more deafening.
But we did have lots of fun times, as always! We saw some 'old' friends, one of whom very gracefully offered drive up to San Francisco with us in his van, which meant we got spared another Greyhound experience and got to do some actual driving on the American freeways again, which was cool, even though it possibly took us longer than the bus would've haha. We got on the road at 10 am and arrived in beautiful San Francisco 11 hours later, where we navigated towards our hostel without any major issues, which was shocking to say the least! It's a pretty cool hostel in a very nice neighbourhood, with a lot of strip bars, makes us feel right at home!
We love San Francisco, it's an amazing place... but more on that later, time for bed!
