Our 3rd flight, 2nd Cathedral and Dan's 1st beer!
Cusco, Peru
There's something strange, but awesome, about having breakfast in one city and dinner in another, especially when you're in a foreign country. I thought waking up in Romford and going to bed in Axminster was exciting enough, I suppose on this trip it is never going to get old...
As we started day two, we left our B and B (with the BIGGEST double bed ever - we woke up this morning a mile or so apart) in Peru's capital, Lima, and arrived in Cusco early this afternoon. The difference between the two cities is quite astonishing. Whilst Lima is the capital, you felt that you had to had to have your wits about you; whereas Cusco is the complete opposite. Granted, here it is far more 'touristy' but it just feels more friendly and relaxed. However, I can't continue 'dissin' Lima without mentioning Patagonia restaurant, where I had my first and last Pisco sours, yummy empanadas and amazing Argentinian steak.
Today we visited Cusco Cathedral, which was as breathtaking as many of the churches in Rome. Sadly you couldn't take pictures inside but they wouldn't do it justice anyway. Picture this: huge grey stone columns and Hogwarts doors, every surface was adorned with religious paintings depicting various biblical scenes (some bigger than the side of my house), and intricately carved pews. Psssst...I found one on the marvel that is Google and added it to the photos!
We had a brief lunch stop in a local pizzeria - we haven't quite found Peruvian cuisine yet - but the ceiling was covered in wine bottles, and there was a Cusco beer on the wall! Following our pizza, chips and oversized drinks bottles, we searched for a bracelet for me as Bob's 'that knot definitely won't come undone' evidently did, (later we would discover that mine were just as poor, when she lost her Lima bracelet too). I also invested in some Peruvian silver in the form of a ring to take the place of mine that I left in the UK.
This evening we went to our hostel's bar and paid 20 Sol (about £6) for a humongous burger, chorizo-esque sausage in a roll, buffet and 650ml bottle of Brahma beer. And yes, I had my first beer, drank it and it wasn't too offensive! Bob was dead proud that I was so manly.
Tomorrow at 6pm, we have our welcome meeting in the hotel for the Inca trial, which judging by our current fitness levels and adjusting to the altitude in Cusco, could well take us the entire ten months we had planned for this trip. Wish us luck.
