After snorkelling during the day in Nha Trang we spent the afternoon and evening sheltering in cafes and bars, waiting for our bus at 9:30 - another sleeper bus! This one looked far less comfortable despite being promised the 'best seats on the bus''it appeared we had the worst! We slept much better in fact, and arrived refreshed in Ho Chi Minh city at 6am! This is another place where the locals are crazy on early morning exercise - most intruiging, as they don't seem to do anything strenuous (more stretching and strange movements, before a break to take a look around for 10 minutes and repeating). After some wandering about we settled on a hotel sold by a woman on the street to us - it was luxury for $5 each (cheapest in the area, too!)
The day was spent seeing the sights on Saigon, beginning with too many cakes from the patisserie and more ice coffee from the streets! The war museum was quite disturbing actually, including a lot of photos and graphic descriptions of torture and mutilation. The worst part was probably the mutation effects of agent orange, chemical used to wipe out large areas but leaving unborn children badly disabled. I think the planes and tanks outside made Ollie a little happier and we probably spent half the time assessing engines (I did try to act enthusiastic...)
The rains hit around lunchtime so we ducking into a seemingly posh, but actually cheap restaurant where Ollie had his best food yet! It was really popular with the younger locals and all the food was cooked outside, so you could choose what you wanted before going into the restaurant. That evening we decided to do the 'done thing' and visit a water puppet show! I wasn't expecting much, but it was really good! We didn't understand the words obviously, but the puppetry was fun and the music was...an experience.
The next day we visited the CuChi Tunnels (and a temple which we wern't too impressed with!) The tunnels were crazy small, considering they had been widened twice already for tourists to enter. It was pretty scary going through them, really dark and claustrophobic. During the tour we also got the chance to fire an AK-47, something Ollie was super excited about. I ventured down to the firing range with him to take a photo only to be persuaded to fire it. Once was enough for me, but I think Ollie would have taken another 10 bullets had it not been expensive!
We were pretty exhausted when we got back, but booked a 3 day tour through the Mekong Delta for the next day anyway, to end in Cambodia! It seemed sensible to take a tour, as the journey was a bit of a nightmare to do by ourselves and we really wanted to visit the floating markets in Can Tho.
