Rough seas.
Having left Dover yesterday we headed east towards Holland to our next destination of Amsterdam. As soon as we rounded the south eastern 'heel' of Kent the seas grew rough and the wind increased in speed. We were tossed about in all directions like a dog's toy in play. The stabilisers were out but they are only effective in a lateral motion, not when the ship is being pushed up and down from forward to aft. It was as though we were a shipload of drunks. Everyone who was mobile lurched awkwardly from side to side between being forced to totter forward in quick running steps as the ship pitched or rocked according to the wind and waves.
I noticed that along our corridor there were many 'Do not disturb' signs on doors, indicating some not so well occupants.
It was exhilarating and challenging up top on Deck 12, the open pool deck, but impossible to open the door to the Promenade deck on Deck 7. The wind was just too strong.
I'd enjoyed lying in bed being rocked off to sleep but we were woken by the captain. Not personally, of course!
There is a speaker system on the ship so announcements can be heard everywhere you are. Most announcements, however, are not heard in the cabins, only in public rooms and corridors. Only really important information is relayed through the speaker in your cabin and this morning it was important. We were not going to Amsterdam after all.
Apparently, to get to the city it is necessary to sail through a series of locks. With the wind raging at 50+ knots, it was too dangerous to attempt and so another port has been cancelled.
AmsterDAM!
Off to Bergen, Norway.
