Helen in Africa
Upon arrival at the clinic today I was given a white coat and told that one of the juniour doctors couldn't make it so I would have to take his place. Haha...yeah sure. Thankfully today was baby day so my job involved undressing and weighing twenty-six newborns and giving them innoculations and vitamin A drops. Thankfully I had done some of that in Nepal although not with babies, who seem so fragile. I didn't like making them cry but I had great fun in the end as obviously the babies were very cute and I nearly cried about three times when one of them kept kissing me on the nose.
Then in the afternoon I had to give out TB and ARV drugs to patients coming to pick them up. What I was doing was quite simple but it does worry me a little being responsible for people's health without proper training. It is unbelievable what they let you do here, so you have to be careful with what you take on. However, it's certainly a great experience and it feels good to be busy and help people. The doctors are very impressed with me now and have said that I can help with the HIV testing of 70 children from an orphanage next week. I feel really happy in the clinic. There is something about working with both babies and people dying from Aids that really puts life into perspective.
Anyway, this weekend Shiama and I are off to Uganda for a few days. We are going white water rafting at the source of the nile with a group of other volunteers from Uganda. Apparently they have some grade five rapids including one called, 'The Ugly One' which sounds ominous. We will then spend Saturday on the Ugandan Islands on Lake Victoria before coming back on the overnight bus Sunday night. Hopefully we will see some Gorillas there. In Uganda...not on the bus.
David and Duncan - please remember that it is your mother's birthday on Sunday.
Mandie - Lauren is back in GPPM. Here is a link to her journal www.statraveljournals.com/laurenm if you want to see how the kids are getting on.
