Our Practice Run for Retirement
After the excitement of the Lone Star Rally, we settled in to our first "destination" of the trip and just in time for the Big Freeze of 2014. We were happy to be south of Dallas when the cold weather hit. The trailer was quite comfortable and the private Hot Tub that came with our site got plenty of use.
Houston required a LOT of driving. Although we liked the park we stayed at (having a river front site helped), I should have paid a little more attention to its location relative to the things we were going to want to do. It would have saved us a lot of time driving back and forth across Houston almost every day.
And there was lots to do...some of it even free. Once the weather warmed up we packed a picnic and went biking around Hermann Park and the local trail system. We took advantage of free museum Thursdays to visit the Museum of Natural History, the Menil Collection and the Photography Museum.
We spent a great day at NASA. I loved it, Dessa maybe not so much. I believe she needs to watch a lot more Star Trek in order to properly appreciate it. This suggestion was not well received but she did agree to re-watch Apollo 13. :-)
To somewhat compensate for the long day at NASA we toured a local craft brewery - Saint Arnold's. Their tour was limited but the admission did come with free beer so Dessa was happy.
We did have some false starts. The Art Car Museum was closed for
renovations (although I'm not sure we missed much given it was housed in
a small garage). The Waugh Street bats were also a no show. You'd
think out of a colony of several hundred thousand, at least 1 could have
come out for a visit but after sitting outside for 90 minutes the
largest thing we saw was a moth.
We had a good time in Houston but we learned that we need to be a bit quicker to plan what we want to do. There were several things that we missed due to weather and timing. Guess we'll cover them when we come back to the area for next year's Lone Star Rally.
