Bikepacker's South American Adventure
Bonus points to anyone who knows where those lyrics came from. Those roosters are pretty raucous and it is only 4 am.
This is my buffer day, in case my flight didn't make it on time for the Galapagos trip so it has been pretty quiet. I took a local bus to Cumbaya (are you singing it now too?) for a gander. It was a pretty squishy ride and I think the guy behind me enjoyed the squishiness a wee bit too much! All in a day's commute here.
Almost didn't make it out of the hostal this morning due to a cat that did not want to get off my lap! It belongs to the hostal and is very friendly. Nice way to start the day.
I hung out by the University at the Juan Valdez cafe since it was the only thing open at 9 am. Still can't get used to the night owl schedules here. Sure enjoyed the arequipe latte! Might have enjoyed a few too many and missed the small window of sunshine. I was hoping to rent a bike, apparently there is a rail trail here and they rent bikes but alas there is a thunderstorm now. Time to hole up in a little cafe and watch the world go by for awhile.
I had forgotten how crazy the drivers are here. They don't leave an inch to spare anywhere. There is a definite Andean feel to this town even though it is fairly modern. The kids wear very different school uniforms than in Uruguay, more military than smurf-like. People seem to work hard but also are very social and hang out with family. Seems like a decent balance from this perspective.
Very much looking forward to flying to the Galapagos Islands tomorrow! This has been on my bucket list for 20 years and is long overdue...
