Bikepacker's South American Adventure
Nov 16
We went for a long hike at Punta Espinosa. It was quite beautiful and creepy all at once. We got off the ponga onto some slippery lava rocks and then had to really watch each step as there were so many iguanas and lizards lying around. It was cool but also just a little disconcerting to see so many iguanas that really are not bothered by you. Their camouflage is pretty effective so my biggest fear was actually accidentally stepping on one. Yuk. We eventually made it inland enough to get away from them and see a different landscape.
The volcano is about half a million years old so there were a few things growing and a few salt water ponds that housed some interesting wildlife. One grouper got brought in to a pond about 7 years ago and can't get out. It is a pretty quiet life for the fish,
We had a short snorkel in Tagus Cove but the super moon seems to have made everything pretty choppy so we couldn't see very far. In spite of poor visibility we saw tons of turtles and plenty of fish. The water was warmer and quite honestly, I really enjoyed the swim itself. Water is definitely one of my happy places. Now we have a few hours to relax while we navigate further up Isabela Island. At one point, we will cross the equator.
Indeed we did cross the equator just before dinner, so we celebrated with drinks while we watched the latitude hit 0. We will cross it again later tonight as we are rounding the top of Isabela Island and our ultimate destination is below the equator on the east side of the island. It is a bit of a choppy and bouncy navigation but I am sure it will be worth it.
Tried calling my sister to wish her a happy birthday, but there is no cell service here. Sigh. Happy birthday Debbie!

Cheryl Duckworth I think I would find so many Lizards & Iguanas disconcerting as well. But, sounds like you did just fine with the yuck factor :)
