hello!
still in buenos aires, been here four nights now which is a bit longer than planned, been having so much fun its really hard to leave! finally decided to do some actual travelling now though so i´m off to puerto madryn this afternoon, 18 hour bus ride, yaaaaaay. so anyway buenos aires is awesome, the main activities available seem to be going out drinking and eating massive steaks, so it has been most suitable for me. i arrived at the hostel monday night at about half past midnight, found some friends straight away so dropped off the bags and was in the bar after about 10 mins! went out in san telmo till about 5 in the morning, which has been a bit of a recurring theme the last few days. the hostel is immense, loads of really nice people so havn´t really been on my own at all since i got here. really cheap as well, they just charged me less than 20 quid for 4 nights accomodation and however many beers i put on my room bill, probably lots. awesome. i havn´t just been drinking though, spent most days exploring the different districts of the city with various people, and have had loads of opportunities to practice my spanish, which is coming along pretty well. managed to enquire about and buy my coach ticket entirely in spanish yesterday, which i was pretty chuffed about! paid an extra 15 pesos (like 2.50 pounds) to go executive class, with fully reclining seat, air con, all meals included etc, absolute bargain. the spanish here is quite different to what i´ve been learning, they pronounce ll and y like the z in azure, say vos instead of tu and drop loads of letters off the end of words, so say adio and buen dia for example. can be quite difficult to understand people, getting used to it though.
so yeah it´s all going surprisingly well, almost had a mare when the first leg of my flight was delayed and i had about 20 mins to make my connection in madrid, resulting in lots of bumbling and running round in circles panicking, didnt help that it was the most obscenely confusing terminal ever, made the flight in the end though so its all good. doing better than one of the americans i met, who missed his flight cos he overslept then finally got here and found out his baggage had been sent to washington! then he was using his laptop when some argentinian street urchin from la boca snuck into the hostel and snatched it off his lap and ran out the door! loads of people from the hostel saw him running and chased after him, then apparently loads of locals got involved, caught him, got the laptop back then beat the crap out of him! some 60 year old man was giving him a good hiding. other than that though its seems pretty safe everywhere, i havn´t had any problems at all. also we found the best restaurant ever which gives you MASSIVE steaks and really good wine for stupidly cheap, and has a huge surly waiter who slams your food down really hard and strides around the restaurant bellowing, then pretended to box our ears when we asked for the bill! ideal. also i discovered that i´m now really good at beer pong, beat the reigning champions at the hostel and am still undefeated. almost had some free tango lessons last night but it got cancelled, which was probably for the best cos it meant we could go out for steak again. might have to try it when i come back at the end.
so thats about all the news, the plan now is to head down south via puerto madryn, where theres loads of penguins and stuff, then try to do some hiking in patagonia. some canadian mates are planning to join me down there in the next couple of days so hopefully will be able to go trekking with them, but if we don´t meet up i was talking to some germans who have just been there and apparently its really easy to meet people there anyway. should be awesome. thanks a lot for all your messages, i appreciate it. hope everyone´s ok, keep in touch and i will try and update again soon.
