It almost seemed inevitable that some of the Indian bacteria would make our way through one of our invisible force fields eventually (our nickname for the 5 injections we got before we came here).
And this time it happened to be Amber.
We are unsure when it was. Perhaps the bottled water or the lunch that we ate it a small restaurant. The place was crowded and there were a few westerners so we thought it might be ok but just goes to show you can't be too careful.
So I had to spend the day on my own. Not the best of things when you're in a small town. I went for a walk to try and explore a little but there wasn't much. Just more cows, beggars, small shops, nasty smells. Nothing out of the ordinary. If we'd had more time I wouldn't have minded planning a trek up the mountain but I wasn't going to go it alone.
Today became clear that our journey was nearly over. We'd almost survived one of the dirtiest countries on earth. Yet amongst all the downfalls were some incredible people and incredible sights to see. Not to mention great vegetarian food and many laughs along the way.
Tonight I sat in again on the Aarti. This time I decided to purchase an offering and place it in the river myself. I lit the wick and made a flame, asked whichever god was listening to bless all those less fortunate than myself, placed the offering in the river, as all those did when asking for a blessing, and watched as it floated downstream. I must admit at this point I did feel very close to nature and could feel how this river is such a important part of many peoples lives. It's truly special.
The next morning we took the long 6 hour drive back to Delhi to catch out flight home. Back through the luscious forests, past the small shack towns, past the rubbish lined streets, beeping cars and trucks, back to the smoggy air and congested roads into the bustling city of Delhi. And while I watch the world go by outside the window of the car I reminisce on the week that was, I really do get an understanding of why they call it Incredible India.
