Early this morning I arose and prepared to go to the Green Chapel. I said goodbye to the lord of the castle and thanked him for everything. The squire then led me towards the Green Chapel and when we drew near warned me not to go, saying he would never tell anyone. I had to refuse, and made my way to the Green Chapel. Upon arriving, I could hear the Green Knight sharpening his blade as he prepared to smite me. We went into a valley and I took off my helmet and prepared to die. He swung his axe around and made me flinch, to which he laughed. I promised him it wouldn't happen a second time, and when he tried to scare me again, I held still. On his third strike, he aimed so precisely as to only cut the skin on my neck. As soon as i felt it, I got up and prepared to fight, but the Green Knight did not wish to fight. He said that the first two strikes were for promise kept, while the third strike was for the wound I gave him by not giving him the green lace. It turns out he was the lord of the castle, and that the lady had tempted me because he told her to. I was ashamed afterwards, and gave him the lace, asking that he cut my head off anyway for my wrongdoing. He graciously forgave me, gave me the green lace to remember my adventure, and invited me back to his castle. "I must back to Camelot, I may not bide longer. But tell me, noble sir, how comes this enchantment? Who are you that ride in green and die not when beheaded? How come you dwell, a noble knight in a fine castle, and also to strike axe-blows, the Green Knight of the Green Chapel?" (100). He introduced himself and claimed that his magic comes from Nimue, the lady of the lake. He had been sent to Camelot to test the Knight of the Round Table. We then said goodbye and I began my journey back to Camelot.
