Day 1 - 23/02/09
Got the train to Sukkhothai (was a capital of the first kingdom of Siam - former name of Thailand, in the 13th and 14th century. On our journey there was a Dutch guy who had taken a load of Valium hence his antics entertained the crowd! Wonder if he ever made it to Chiang Mai!!!
We got picked by Songthaew and got dropped to the J&J Guesthouse. We cooled off in the pool and in the evening went to Pino's (our local contact) house as she had arranged for us to have Thai massage. She had got the nurses from the hosital and it was fantastic, all the knots in my body were loosened and I was so relaxed!! After an hour of being pounded and stretched, we went back to the guesthouse where we had dinner with Ae recommending dishes to try. After dinner everyone dispersed.
Day 2 - 24/02/09
Today everyone was up early, got songthaews to the historical park in the old city. We hired bikes and went on a cycling tour of the park. Here there are a number of notable monuments which represent a masterpiece of the first Thai architectural style. We visited all the monuments and Ae was our tour guide giving us the history and significance of the monuments. It was beautiful and very informative. We also had the opportunity to see Ae release some fish in the freedom pool and Lisa's heart went out to the bagged turtles which she released. There is a belief that you get good karma releasing fish, eels, turtles etc that are bought in the market into the freedom pond in the historical park. They cannot be fished from here. After 3-4 hrs of cycling around, we stopped for lunch. Pino had made us Massaman curry and rice, I had tofu curry. It was delicious, whatever weight we had lost with the cycling, we put back on with the delicious food!!!
After the tour we headed to the bus stop and took the bus to our next destination - Lampang!!!
