I was picked up from the air port by a lovely local called Richard who was holding a sign with my name on it - yes 'Rebecca Thomas', not anything rude or insulting - in fact I nearly missed Richard and my name. Knowing that the last time I had spoken to Daubs was his Thursday night and he was battered, knowing that last night was Friday and end of term and that he would be battered again when he met up with Rups, I honestly was not expecting Rebecca Thomas on the sign!
After jumping on Rups after only three hours sleep and a fresh pot of coffe made, we were ready to make a plan - or so Daubs kept reminding us! Deciding to stay put for the day so that we could have an quiet night and get going early doors Rupert was insistent on making the most of the day and doing at least something touristy! Well I'm glad because we couldn't have had a better first day, catching up, laughing and yes of course drinking!
Our first stop was to feed Daubney! Breakfast at the mall and then a hysterical shop to stock up ready for our adventure (with Christmas carols playing in the background!! Random!!) Our shop was par for the course and I think probably quite an indication of the randomness that our tour will take. We walked out of that shop with everything we needed including Fiji Carrots (suspiciously looking like limes), a baby changing mat (for me to sleep on), a huge purple price of foam (for Daubs to sleep on - the big girl!) and of course enough booze to sink a battle ship.
After the ordeal of a mall for two hours with Rups and Daubs there was only one thing for it.... G&Ts all round! So an hour was taken to chill out on Daubs veranda, watching the monkeys and listening to the rain - a great opportunity to catch up.
I'm sorry Tim, but this afternoon I was unfaithful and what a beauty he was, tall, handsome and his tongue was so long, although a little rough! Yes, today I kissed a giraffe at the giraffe sanctuary.
After an hour without a beer it was time to get on it again, Daubs took us to Karen Blixton's Bar - a beautiful example of colonial Kenya. After a few in this stunning, quintessential restaurant/bar it was time to get back to the real Africa and drink some Tuskar in less salubrious surroundings with a friend of Daubs', Scott and his over land tour mates.
Quite surprisingly we were pretty sensible and in bed by 11pm ready for out adventure to begin.
