We strolled down to the town of West End for a leisurely breakfast. What a view, and as we sat there eating pancakes and looking over the beach a lovely young policeman resplendent in his crisp white shirt and black trousers with a red stipe down each side came up and started chatting with us, his name was Nicholas and he lived in Roatan now but had been stationed in several provinces around Honduras before this.
We decided to go over to West Bay for the day as we were told that it had the most beautiful beach in the world. It was nice, but they obviously haven't been to Australia because our beaches leave it for dead!
We were approached by several different men saying that they were water taxi drivers and offering to take us to West Bay for $3 U.S. Everything is in U.S. Dollars here. After initial suspicion we decided they were in fact the water taxis so we hopped on one and we were away! The water taxis are a very haphazard affair, not at all organised like in Australia.
West Bay was full of lounge chairs that you could hire for the day for $10 U.S. They even came with a guard armed with a automatic rifle to guard your things! We opted for the shade of a Coconut tree for free. The water was wonderful, I had two sims, punctuated by lunch at a beach side restaurant. Nice view, but overlooked and overpriced food.
We have to keep converting everything into the local currency of Cordobas because that is what we have. It is a pain as well as a disappointment that people here have bowed to the American dollar especially after what America has done to many countries in Central America.
In the afternoon water taxis were few and far between so we ended up sharing one with 5 other people, lucky we all had life jackets. It was a slow but uneventful and pleasant journey back to West End.
We wandered around the hotel's pool and admired the sunset before making ourselves comfortable on the outdoor deck chatting and lazing around. Surprisingly there don't seem to be Mosquitos here so it is pleasant to sit outside.
