Monday 21st.
This morning we woke to arriving in Cologne, Germany, and after breakfast there were two guided tour options, one to visit a chocolate maker or a historic walk through the city centre, I chose the walk, who needs chocolate with the amount of food we are consuming at the moment! the walk took us through the old part of town which was very interesting and especially where years ago they found ruins of tunnels and walls of the old Jewish quarter and are now excavating it to turn it into a museum. it is going to take a long time to finish as they are being very careful with the diggings, then on to the Cathedral of Cologne which is very impressive and has taken over 632 years to complete and this is another story in itself but I bought a booklet on it's history just to make sure the guide had her facts correct, inside is magnificient and photo's cannot do it justice, plus I forgot to charge the battery and was really struggling to get good photo's. after a look through the church we had just over an hours spare time to do what we wanted, some went speed shopping and others just wandered around the city. back to the tour buses and on to Bonn as the ship had sailed on to there, once we rejoined the ship we sailed onto Andernach where we were to stay overnight.
For dinner we received an invitation to dine in a castle called Schloss Burg Namedy.
Upon arrival we are greeted by Princess Luise and she invited us to wander the gardens and then to look over the rooms of the castle, which have been beautifully restored, although it is her and her families residence as with most of these castles it is now a working concern and mainly used for weddings, conference etc, very popular for functions such as music festivals. finally we are summoned by the Princess walking through the rooms banging a gong, and the dining room is then opened up, we sat to a four course meal and was well done, the dinner also included a piano recital by a student who was studying at the university of Cologne, both food and entertainment was superb.
The boat stays in the harbour overnight and leaves at around 4:45 in the morning and sails in the direction of Koblenz, this becomes the landscape we all see on the TV adds with the castles and vineyards, I did get up very early to see the very first castle and it was beautiful, but not long after the rain started so downstairs I had to go,
Tuesday 22nd.
At the moment we are docked in Rudesheim and there are two tour options today, a musical instrument museum or a cable ride over the vineyards to a high peak overlooking the town, we were going on the cable ride but it is damm cold and raining, so decided to stay on the boat.
Later today we set sail upstream arriving in Miltenburg on Wednesday.
