¡Buenas Tardes!
Here we are in Equador. The actual border crossing from Peru was the most eventful thing that has happened here but I beleive that is in the previous entry.
We´re in Cuenca which is the country´s 3rd largest city and a colonial town founded by the Spaniards in 1557. It´s full of narrow cobbled streets, white churches and buildings with balconies and courtyards. Very pretty. The hostel we´re staying in is one such building and it has a really cosy atmosphere and the courtyard in the middle is perfect for drinks and food. Unfortunately we seem to have run out of hot water though....
After 2 whole days of travelling we were a bit knackered and just had some dinner on the first night and went to bed. Yesterday, the 1st day here, we had a few practicalities to attend to (such as getting my glasses fixed as some fat frenchman stepped on them by the side of the pool in Pisco!) We wandered around the town, saw a few nice plazas and churches and went to market shopping for flops (as we left our sandals at the back of a van in Bolivia!) We even managed to find a peliqueria for Paul to tidy up his mane of hair.
When all was done we got pretty bored and didn´t fancy another night in the hostel so (after taking advantage of Happy Hour, of course!) we went looking for an alternative eatery. It was raining quite a lot but we were so restless (maybe we are now getting tired of each others company!) we thought we´d brave it. Unfortunately, after checking out the recommendations in our guide book we had to return home and eat in the hostel anyway as everywhere else was really expensive, completely empty and lifeless or both. Luckily the food in this hostel is among the best we´ve had in South America. Spag Bol for me! Woo Hoo!
Today we´ve been to a lookout post to the south of the city. It was quite a climb but the views from up there were pretty good. After that we visited a museum and saw shrunken heads from the Shuar people and all sorts. Very cultural.
Tomorrow we´re planning on catching a bus to Baños which is on the outskirts of the jungle. From there we´re hoping to organise a trip in to the forest. Should be exciting! We read something about the internet not working there and some person looking for his mum who had been lost in Baños for the last 3 weeks so if you don´t hear from us in a while...let´s hope we haven´t been eaten by piranhas. Only joking, we´re really looking forward to it.
Hope you are all well, keep in touch!
Love, Betty and Paul.
