This is China
Suzhou, China
Many people say that when you travel you become a different person, sometimes for the better or worse. I think I'm one of the lucky ones who has (or so I believe) become a more complete person. I think its seeing people who are normally 5000 miles away from me live so differently and yet have so many similarities. It reminds you that were all just human regardless of which country were born in.
Anyway ill stop boring you all with the "I'm finding myself " crap. So I've been here for two months and the experience so far has been EPIC, weird and wonderful and also a little boring.
Every day I wake up at 6.15 and have a nice fresh coffee on my balcony giving myself 15mins to wake up and adjust to whatever weather I'm being treated to ( and yes mum I drink coffee now and I have no idea why I suddenly like it). Then it's the fun part !! Getting to work!
The morning commute is something I can only describe as being a game of pinball but you're the ball. I cycle to work only takes me about 15mins but I get the distinct feeling that all the Chinese people are playing a game that I call Who can knock the white lady off her bike first.
I get to my school and wait at the gate to greet all the children as the arrive. The parents always try to speak to me in Chinese and my answer to them is always "OK" this word seem to get you through every conversation you have in china so God knows what I've been agreeing to the past 2 months. So I just spend my day with the kids until I finish at 4.30. I love my class they are all very sweet and loving :) I know it will be so hard to leave them!
The food here is very strange, not at all what I Expected. It is usually either delicious or vile never in-between. Some of the weird things I've eaten didn't actually taste that bad, like snail, chicken feet, ducks feet and duck tongue. These are all things that people eat a lot of in Suzhou. Every meal takes a long time eat because you're eating with chopsticks and everything still has some kid of bone or cartilage that you have to get past first I don't think I've had one piece of meat or fish that didn't have some kind of bone attached to it.
I miss home a bit you kind of have an idyllic memory of home, convincing yourself that England really is a green and pleasant land. Living here is easy and everyone when I left told me how brave I was for moving out here but it's not brave. Suzhou is a beautiful modern city with kind people and a friendly atmosphere that any westerner could grow to love. If I didn't miss you lot so much I think I could easily live here longer.
Nothing will ever replace home but you can grow to love this traveling stuff !
