Wednesday 30th continued by Tiff………………….
Showered and ready, feeling much better with washed hair and clean clothes, we headed downstairs for pizza and beer before the bar crawl. A few people had arrived but it was one of those first nights out at Uni moments where you feel pressured to go and speak to people, but as we had each other we were fine. Having not eaten for a number of hours, we were relying on the all you can eat pizza to save us from getting drunk too quick, however it was like a fight to the finish to get any, so we sat outside and waited our turn. When we were outside we got talking to a few people, three Serbians, Milijin (pronounced Million), Dragon (not sure if this is how you spell it) and Jack. As well as a Dutch guy called Neils and a girl from Columbia can't remember her name, stood around chatting about the usual topics, where we have been, home and football. They were a nice lot so stuck together, we managed to grab a couple of slices of pizza on the way out to soak up some alcohol we were about to consume.
The bar crawl leader was insane, shouting ´VAMOS VAMOS!´ and liked to climb on anything he could find, we were also given flashing faces to put round our necks so we got into the bars etc, our pink ones looked relatively liked boobs as i have modelled on one of the photos!
Walked through Palermo to the main square, on route we saw a radio station being recorded, of course being on a bar crawl we all caused havoc outside trying to put them off, with Dragon thinking it would be appropriate to pull a mooney! Very funny! Anyway arrived at the first bar and got a large shot of Beth's favourite, Tequila! and ordered more beer. Sat around chatting and drinking, when a competition came about of who could down their drink the fastest, me being a lightweight opted out, leaving Beth and Jack. Of course drinking beer is usually a man thing so I didn't have much hope for Beth, but amazingly she won and much quicker than Jack! Woo hoo England!!!! Beth then attempted to race Neils the 6ft 6in Dutch guy and failed miserably, but one out of two is amazing enough, so I was beaming with pride!
Moving onto the next bar we had a few photos and conversations in the street, mainly with a guy called Lucas from Brazil who was very drunk and just shouting about Brazil and wasn't too impressed when we told him we didn't like Sao Paulo too much, as he lived there! Oops! Got to the next bar and were given more free shots of this time Vodka, took advantage of more than one free shot thinking it would be cheaper than buying drinks lol. Beth had very bad hiccups and nothing would get rid of them, so decided to ask the bar man for some vinegar, he handed her a brandy glass of what we thought was vinegar, but after Beth took a huge gulp and spat it back out we realized it was Olive oil! Maybe it was the fright of nearly necking a glass of oil but her hiccups had gone, only to be transferred to me. Sat outside and drank even more beer, we were ready to go dancing but as per usual in Argentina no one goes to a club before 2am, so we had to wait.
Went to the third and final bar, this time being given some kind of shot in a test tube, we were far too drunk at this point to care what it was. I went to the DJ and mithered him to play something English, but he only played Electronico (which was pap!) but danced anyway to avoid being sick. Beth had found an Irish friend called Ciaran and whilst I was in the loo struggling with the damn playsuit, decided to go with him to buy some fags, we know this is ignoring the advice of our parents but it was only three blocks away and he was a nice guy. However the trip took much longer than expected, so at this point I was outside waiting, asking the security guards a number of questions about mi amiga, as well as praising them for their work? It was only when the bar crawl had to move on to the club I started to panic thinking I would never see Beth again! Especially as we had both left our mobiles at home just in case we got robbed. Still no sign, I decided to stick with the Serbian guys and move on to avoid being left on the streets alone. The security guard had promised me he would let Beth know where we had gone, which was only down the street. Finally about fifteen minutes later as I was waiting outside the club I heard and then saw Beth down the street, running towards each other we embraced each other lovingly. (not too lovingly, as we all know what I am like with showing affection) We were so pleased to see each other and Beth explained she has taken wrong turn and ended up walking round and round. All being ok we went into the club, what the club actually looks like is very hazy, we just remember pink lights and Regaetton music, we danced for a while, before Beth said she needed to go home as she was far too drunk and couldn't see! To be fair I was pretty gone myself, but I was definitely the more sober and this time it was me who was looking after Beth! Definitely a role reversal! Walked outside trying to find somewhere to find food, Beth shouting "Pancho, Hot Dog!" in a very Warrington accent there was no food to be found, so we walked home, randomly chatting to two Brazillian guys and sang Wonderwall by Oasis down the street. As we got close to the hostel we saw a bunch of people around a car, their tyres had been robbed (safe neighbourhood!), we entertained them by trying to get a picture with the police man and robbed his hat, then Beth attempted to get onto a tow truck for a picture but fell to the floor like as the Brazilian guy put it, "A Potato!" Got back to the hostel where Beth requested Pizza, then slumped on the chair, I asked the receptionist to order Pizza and waited for it to arrive, by the time it did Beth was nearly asleep so I ate half and took Beth to bed, she collapsed on a free bottom bunk in our room. I can quite honestly say I've never seen her like that before. We both passed out about 4am after having a very fun and eventful evening!
Thursday 1st July
Day of death! Woke up late and missed breakfast, both feeling worse for wear we needed to cure our hangovers so got dressed and walked to the nearest McDonalds which wasn't even nice but made us feel slightly better.
Headed back to the hostel, where we stayed in our room reading, lounging about and slept some more. Finding it very hard to motivate ourselves to do anything else we actually did just stay in all day, only getting up to order a takeaway for dinner, we managed to find a Chinese and enjoyed spring rolls and chicken chow mein, nowhere near as good as at home but did the trick! Being hungover in a hostel is the worst thing ever especially in a room with a bright light and prison grey walls, we decided for an ideal hangover day you need, your duvet, as many cups of tea as you like, TV and DVDs (preferably something soppy), Marmite toast and finally your boyfriend!
Friday 2nd July
Woke up early, feeling much more refreshed. Had breakfast and packed up, checked out and got the Subte (Metro) to our prebooked hostel in San Telmo. Buenos Aires is so big its best to stay in the different areas so you can get a feel of each one and after sweating it out on the metro with our backpacks and having to walk miles, up and down stairs to connect lines we finally made it to the hostel. Checked in and dumped our stuff, we have stayed in a couple of Che Lagarto´s in Brazil which weren't the best so we dreaded this one but it was surprisingly ok. Decided to book a Tango show for the evening so spent some time choosing which one to go to, treated ourselves to a better show with dinner which cost 60 pound, which meant we were tightening our purse strings for the next few days. Walked around San Telmo, seeing a few sights out of the guide book, we went to the famous Plaza Dorrego where we saw a couple Tango dancing, which got us excited about the show. San Telmo seemed slightly less safe than Palermo and less trendy but more authentic and charming in a different way, they also seem to be wild on antique shops. We found a bank and had some lunch, it was quite cloudy and cold, so with not much else to see we went back to the hostel to settle in and chill before the show.
Got ready and waited for our transfer, we were on a minibus with a few other tourists and had to stop off to pick up others. We had decided to make a little effort and where our heels which we haven't worn since we left the UK, so we were walking like Patrick Swayzee in heels and had to concentrate on every step, Beth decided to go to the shop whilst we were waiting for a couple from a hotel on the main street, I watched her go off, walking with confidence, as I watched her I thought she was going at a quick pace with her arms swinging. I told the bus driver to wait a moment, when I saw Beth reappearing with a big grin on her face, I asked her what was wrong and she said "I gather you didn't see?" which I obviously didn't, then she told me she has fallen flat on her face in front of a huge table of men and was helped up by an old Spanish guy who asked her if she was ok, like she'd been shot. This story told in person is much much funnier but it still makes me chuckle writing it now, another graze to add to her collection!
Arrived at Madero Tango and were escorted inside, we were sat on a table next to a Brazilian family, slightly too close for comfort if you ask me, especially as the lady I had to sit next to was pretty bonny to say the least. Our meal was delicious, Seafood salad, Stuffed chicken and Tiramisu/Cheesecake for dessert, with a bottle of chardonnay.
The show was great, the dancers were fantastic and we thought it was amazing how in time they were; well they had to be to avoid kicking each other in the head or nether regions. There were a couple of singers in between the dancing who sang in Spanish so we couldn't really appreciate the meaning but worked out it was to do with a heart (not chicken) and lots of thanks to Maradonna and Buenos Aires.
As the show finished we were given a glass of champagne which we got overly paranoid about drinking due to our bad luck with not having enough money to pay the bill the other night, turns out for some reason we were the only ones to get free Champagne. We told ourselves it was a gift from one of the dancers in the show who gave Beth a cheeky look at the end when taking a bow.
When the show finished we got a transfer back to the hostel, enjoying a few 80´s classics on the radio, went to bed when we got in ready for the big game the next day!!!
Saturday 3rd July
Woke up early to make sure we were on time for the match, had breakfast, got ready and made our way to San Martin Square to watch the game on the big screen. The first subway was like a ghost town as we were running a bit late we gathered everyone would be there already, it got busier nearer the stop and when we arrived in the square it was crazy!!! Thousands of people in a sea of blue and white, waving flags, banging drums and tooting horns, it was a fab atmosphere (photos do not do it justice), we got fairly close to the main screen, not wanting to go any further and risk our lives, we watched the matched and cheered on Argentina. Unfortunately Germany scored, but the crowds weren't down heartened, we then all went wild when we thought Argentina has scored but turns out the goal was offside, a bit of a let down! The second half was tense and we hoped Argentina would score, but nope Germany went and scored 3 more! Which meant Argentina are now out of the World Cup, lots of Argentineans left before the end of the game but we stayed and watched and felt very sorry for Maradonna who I have become very fond of during my time in Argentina. Leaving the square feeling very gutted we were asked to say a few words in front of the camera, even though we explained we were English? Beth did the talking just saying we were sad and hated Germany, and I added "Boooo!" for a bit of affect! Lol Hopefully we will not be live on Sky Sports or something! This is probably the 5th occasion we could have been on TV the whole trip!
With the whole of Buenos Aires in a bad mood, we walked around looking at the last few sights we would see in the centre and headed to Galerias Pacifico (Trafford Centre of BA) and to Calle Florida the main shopping street, waiting to buy our souvenirs at the market tomorrow we held off shopping and went for some food where we saw Jack and the Columbian girl from the bar crawl (what a small world). Not having much else to see or do we went back to the hostel.
Currently adding photos for your pleasure! Not sure on our plans for this evening but will keep you updated on our last couple of nights in Argentina, will be pretty sad to leave, but onwards we must go….feels slight odd to be thinking about flying as we have become accustomed to our long overnight bus journeys!
Miss you and Love you all
