Had another great day in school today - doing something a little bit different. There was a child protection talk on for the children and their families so lessons were cancelled for the day.
There were benches that needed a new coat of paint so I spend my morning using sandpaper to remove all the rust and the afternoon painting. I ended up absolutely covered in rust and paint. (see picture) At lunch time I looked like I'd had a really bad fake tan.
Morning was cool enough in the shade and spending time just concentrating on getting rid of the rust was really relaxing and therapeutic. Is always good to have an excuse to get really dirty too. Was funny to see everyones faces too.
Afternoon started ok but then started to get hotter and where I had been sat was no longer in the shade so after putting on sunscreen over the rust I moved into the shade to work on another bench. Khmer staff really struggled to understand my need to move completely away from the sun - sunstroke and sunburn seem to be alien concepts.
Painting was good fun too and after so tutoring and advice on painting from Alan I think I did a pretty good job. Definitely ended the day with the satisfaction of a job well done.
I think that's one of the best things about being a volunteer - the variety of different things that you can get involved in doing. All about seeing what the project needs and how your time is going to be best spent. Not sure I'd consider a change of career but a very enjoyable one off day.
Now for another relaxing weekend - possibly a trip to the swimming pool! Bliss!
