Back to the mainland we go...
Ao Nang was recommended to us by the ferry ticket taker, so thats where we went. Gotta trust a local, right?! Our first full day there we decided to venture out on our own. Hopefully getting outta the tourist crowds, we hired bikes. The lonely plantet tells us that Khao Phanom Bencha National Park is only 20 kms north of Krabi and it has the beautiful 11 tier Huai waterfall. We were keen for some hiking, so we packed our day packs and set out. Well 20 kms came and went...and so did the next 3 hours and we still hadn't seen the sign for the park. We decided to trust the good ole map function on the iphone and follow what looks to be a road cross country, to where we 'think' the park should be. Lets just say that after 3 more hours of riding, the highlight of the day was finding a market. With high spirits, and believing we were never actually lost...just didn't find where we wanted to go, we set out again the next day determined to find the park. The lonely planet didn't lie...it was actually 20kms north of Krabi!!!
Worth the trip, the waterfall was beautiful and it definitely left its mark on us. Susy made a donation to the local leach blood bank and my be-hind had seen better days(nearly 2 weeks later its still black and blue).
Next stop Railay, home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and a rock climbers heaven. An isolated area with access to 5 beaches, caves, and the view of many islands off the coast. Our daily activities were somewhat hindered by the amount of alcohol that was consumed the night before. But I did manage to paddle out to different islands, snorkeling around each, admiring their cliffs and the undisturbed natural beauty. After 4 memorable days here we needed to move on:(
Off to Khao Sok. Another national park with loads of hiking potential. Our second day there we decided to do an overnight trip across ChliawLan Lake to Tonetuey. This was a very small village of floating huts. We had high hopes of wildlife encounters but were mostly presented with another species of leeches! Due to it being rainy season we were unable to make the trek the whole way through Nam Ta Lu Cave...but we did venture inside the cave for 45 minutes swimming, hiking and rock climbing our way as far as Ya Ya would allow.
With another park conquered we're headed back to the coast for more island adventures. Full moon parties and scuba diving are on the horizon...
