This is what a building that was not renovated after the soviets left looks like. They let east Berlin languish after they started occupying it and it shows in many of the buildings there. Any buildings they did put up after the war were prefabricated abominations. The artists who own the building want to keep it in this state as a reminder of what Berlin was like under soviet control.
