I made my way by bus to my new destination, Ecuador. I got to the capital city of Ecuador, Quito, by bus. I am now using my fourth currency of my trip, the U.S dollar. Ecuador uses the U.S dollar because of their economic situation here. I am very impressed by the Cathedral in Quito called the Basilica. The Cathedral gives a great view of the entire city.
I booked my tour to the equator line from Quito. There are 10 countries in total that lie on the equator line. You can stand on both sides of the line. Part of your body will be in the northern hemi-sphere and the other part of your body will be in the southern hemi-sphere. This tour of the equator did not disappoint.
It was brilliant to see right in front of me how the equator line works. Our guide asked us to try and balance on the line and walk across it like a tight rope. To my amazement I was unable to balance. As I walked across the line I kept falling off. The reason given for this is that gravity is experienced in a very different way on the Equator.
Check the blog for videos of the differences between the northern and southern hemisphere. It's a well-known fact that the northern and southern hemispheres have their water drained in the opposite direction. It was incredible to see the difference between the two so close to the Equator line. The guide started by showing us the water going down the drain on the Equator line. We watched as the water went straight down the drain. The guide then moved the sink to the northern hemisphere and poured the water down. We witnessed as the water drained down in a clockwise direction. Then when tested on the southern hemisphere the water drained down in an anti-clockwise direction. This was absolutely fascinating to see in such close proximity to the Equator line. I was a very impressed bear.
In the northern hemisphere we experience hurricanes and tornados. With these natural disasters the wind moves in a clockwise direction. However in the southern hemisphere countries they experience typhoons and cyclones. These extreme weather conditions occur in an anti-clockwise direction. Countries on the equator line can never experience any of these natural disasters. We are lucky in Ireland as we are not in an area that experiences any of these terrible weather conditions.
After a great time in Quito I decide that I need some time with some more animals so I booked a trip to the Galapagos Islands. I am very excited about this trip. It is one of the main reasons for my trip to South America. I will leave for the islands by plane in the next few days.
