Ben in Uganda
Things people take for granted back home
- Toilets - I just think of a normal toilet with a toilet seat that you can sit on and smile. Over here, where we are now and where we'll be staying for the next 7 months we have to go outside to the outhouse where there's a longdrop (i.e. a hole in the ground). Peeing is okay, although i saw 3 cockroaches the other day, but to poo you have to squat. Plus the smell is foul.
- Clean water - Back home when you're feeling thirsty or need to wash your hands you can just get water from the tap, over here, the water can be contaminated with diseases such as cholera, so in order to purify it, you have to boil it for 10-15 mins then leave it to cool, which can take ages. Also, there arent many taps around the place and you have to pay for a big 20 litre cannister of water.
- Showers/baths - In order to wash we have to go to a small outhouse room next to the longrop with a basin and some water and then kneel or squat down and use our hands to throw water over ourselves. Shampooing is a nightmare.
- Dishwasher - Dishwashers = quick, easy, little effort. Over here we have to fill a basin with water and a bit of soap and wash it all by hand outside.
- Washing machine - See above but replace dishes with clothes. It took us 2.5 hours the other day.
- Storage - Our bags are still packed because there's nowhere to put anything and the room is only big enough for our beds. We'll be moving soon though and hopefully we'll have some more space.
- Public transport - In Australia there are trains, trams, buses and taxis, which almost always have air con. In Uganda, the two main types of public transport are boda bodas (motorbike) and mutatus (minibus). Boda bodas are extremely fun but bloody dangerous, with neither driver nor passenger/passengeres (they can squeeze up to 3 on) wearing helmets and weaving between the traffic. Mutatus are hot, muggy minibuses which are meant to have up to 14 passengers but don't say no to anyone so can squeeze on about 20. We've recently discovered hitch hiking though, the friendlier, cheaper option.
- Mosquitoes - Mosquitoes in Australia are annoying. Mosquitoes in Uganda are annoying and carry malaria.
Running out of internet time. Will add more soon! xx
