This one took a while to post. Mainly because it's taken me about a week of R & R in London to get my head back together again!...Ok so there's been a few drinking sessions in London as well. The great Euro road trip kicked off in Munich after day 5 of Oktoberfest. Chrissy, Pete Gigantic Balls, Jezza, Nate and I went to the airport on Thursday to pick up a hire car and hit the Auto Bahn. A credit to the Germans the Auto Bahn is INSANE! Works very well - and we pushed our Chevy Captiva (basically a badged holden) upto about 180Km/h on the first day. This is pretty standard for the fast lane!
The road trip runs like this...first Stop Stuttgart. We were here for a night, about 250kms out of Munich. Lonely planet described it as a dead spot for Tourists...WRONG. We landed in a full on German night club playing terrible 80's music and ended up in one of the seediest red light district Europe has to offer. No more details required...
Stop two was Berlin. Chrissy punched out a 12 hour driver whilst we all drank in the car and cranked tunes on iPod thru the Chevy's s*** hot sound system. NOTE: CHRIS WAS DRIVING AND WE RAN OUT OF FUEL ON THE AUTO BAHN. After finally arriving at our hostel we stopped at Burger King (the official food of our tour) and hit Parliament house before it closed to have a look inside. As well as take the lads down to the Brandenburg Gate. Looks better at night time! Not too much to drink that night as we had a 4.30am wake up call to hit Belushi's to watch the AFL grand final (round 1). To avoid writing an essay here, let's just say this was by far the biggest day of the tour. Roughly a 25 hour bender for some of us and a 30 hour bender for one of us, it was absolute chaos. Offexploring would censor nearly every detail if I posted it on here....
Next stop Warsaw in Poland. I drove about 5 hours of this trip. Right hand side of the road with a broken brain IS NOT EASY. Especially in the city, however we made it to our hostel. "Nathan's village hostel" appropriate choice for our long haired passenger from Wagga. We ate dinner in a polish restaurant with a rude arsed waiter. He NO RIKEY AUSTrALIANS. No Tip for him. The red wine was alright tho...
We woke around 10 the next day. Ate some KFC...mmmm KFC and then hit the road again on the way to Krakow. By the way Poland, next to Germany your Roads are s***house. Also they don't understand that it's normal to walk into a servo with no shoes on at home. Pete and I got laughed and yelled at hysterically by some Polish bird. Krakow looked like an awesome place. Old town was sensational. However it was a Monday night and the night life was a little limited. Def a 'go back to' one weekend.
We hit the road again the next morning and drove to Auschwitz. We did a three hour tour which covered Birkenau and Auschwitz. I'd recommend this to anyone travelling in Europe. It was a massive eye opener for me. It was probably the most quiet all of us had been all trip. We all walked through the death camp and concentration camp in the freezing cold with our mouths hanging open. I was pretty glad to get out of there when the tour was finished.
Once back in the car we hit the road for a late night drive through Slovakia to Hungary for a 2 and a half night stop over it Budapest. Along the way the highway we were following suddenly STOPPED. Apparently it was under construction but the map had it going the whole way through. Thanks to Pete's phone luckily finding roaming data Google maps saved the day. We had a path on the back roads to Budapest. Along the way up a windy road Nate nearly collected a MASSIVE deer. We thought roos were bad, HOLY s***. You should have seen this thng!
Budapest was Sensational. Awesome looking city and aside from some transport fines for riding the trams without a ticket (pretty standard really) we had a blast. Our hostel owner was a champion. Recommending an awesome restaurant and walking tour. However his opinion changed of us on the last night when too much noise was coming out of our room on the last night. It was a very distinctive noise involving two people. Nuff said...However there is a video
Onto Prague for a 2 night stop over - it was the weekend again and we were ready for grand final round 2! In the process of the game our room got raided and mine and Jezza's latops got pinched. As well as Nate's iPod and a few other bits and pieces. The cops came we gave info but couldn't give an official statement as we were too pissed. I blew 0.147 at 1.30 in the afternoon. I think Petey hit about 0.17. Looks like the cop shop was a morning job for us! Funny though. The night out that followed in Prague...HECTIC is the word and again I think censorship would be an issue. By the way..WHAT A s*** GRAND FINAL.
After a morning stop off at the Cop shop. Most of the hard work done by Jezza and Chrissy might I add as Nate and I couldn't get out of bed, we were on the way back to Munich. We got into the airport around 3 in the arvo to drop the car off. Then on the train back to Munich for one more hit out at Oktoberfest and a Pork Knuckle. Oh Pork Knuckle how I love the. Pete and I tallied 8 knuckles for the trip that day.We smashed about 5 stiens each. Got to a pretty good level of crazy and then got told off by security back at the hostel for sitting on the window sill of our room and shouting s*** at people below. Come on...it's the Australian way!
That road trip was serious highlight of my Euro Tour. There are already talks of a sequel next year through Spain and Portugal. Start saving your pennies boys. Next year we're hiring a bus.....
