Day 13 and we wake up to breakfast brought to our door: cappuccinos, cornettos (croissants filled with jam) and yoghurts. Also a few random breakfast items: pork liver pate, alpine cheese (made in Austria, imported by by a company from New Zealand) and Aloe Vera flavoured yoghurt. Hmm...
We decided to walk along the Sentiro Azzurro today - a hike that takes in all 5 cinque terre villages in about 12km. We walked east to Riomaggiore, the largest of the five and then caught a train to Monterosso at the western end. In Monterosso we found a foccaciaria(?!) for lunch (amazing) before taking a dip in the Italian Med (gorgeous and warm!).
Our plan was the to walk the 7km to Corniglia (the path was closed from there to Manarola due to risk of landslides). We thought 2 hours was hugely generous for the mere 3km first leg to Vernazza. We failed to consider how much of that 3km was upwards through uneven, narrow, rocky paths without handrails... It took two hours and we were done!!
Back to our hotel and we had a few well earned gin and tonics on our terrazzo overlooking Manarola (reading our books, in our dressing gowns & watching the sun go down!) before heading into town for pizza. Unfortunately this is not a Manarolese speciality, so it appears. However, it gave me (Jen) my first opportunity to complain in Italian and that was almost better than eating the pizza myself (Rox you'd be so very proud)
Off to Tuscany tomorrow for our week long break - can't wait!
