Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
Today, we woke up and got ready early, because we were heading to Graceland, home of the King of rock n roll. Elvis Presley. It was a half hour drive into Memphis after we tried to get our free breakfast at the hotel, which was unavailable due to "renovations". I was fairly dubious, and even more so when the response to me asking was, "the ceiling has fallen down". Which would apparently be being repaired at 9, conveniently when breakfast finishes, and would be back up and running by tomorrow. Like I said, dubious. When we arrived at Graceland, I didn't know the place was so big, we bought our tickets and had to wait for a shuttle to take us to his mansion. The mansion itself was unbelievable, it looked as if nothing had been touched since he lived there. It also had a real retro theme, obviously because the style hadn't been changed for over 30 years. It looked like it had been stuck in time. We looked at the pasture for his horses, the jungle room and his pool room. Upstairs was private and off limits, the tour was still very interesting, especially as we had our own iPads with headphones for information. We saw the graves out the back and there were a fitting tribute to the man and his family, with a little fountain and long gravestones, they did them all justice. We then moved onto the cars, and there were some real gems, Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Mercedes were some of the makes of car he had in his fleet, each one unique in its own way. Then the clothes and records, I don't think I've ever seen so many gold albums and singles, the man really was a genius. Even admitted by his peers in one of the museums rooms. Elton John calling him his inspiration. There was the military room, where all the information about his service was kept, serving in Germany me even signing autographs there at a set time every day. All this before a thorough look through the gift shop, because we had a lot of gifts to buy different people. Then once we had spent a small fortune, we went back to the motel and chilled out ready for the day ahead tomorrow.
