We had planned for just 2 nights in Split originally, but enjoyed the sun and sea so much we decided to stay another 2, and then another 2. Split is centred around it's harbour and the Dominican palace. Surrounding this were several beaches, only the main of which was sand, the rest were pebble. We decided that the main beach was too busy, and found "our spot" the other side of the harbour on some rocks. We spent nearly every day here, living a hard life of sunbathing and jumping in the sea to cool down.
We spent the first two nights at Hostel Antonio. Located right in the centre of the old town behind the harbour, this hostel was run by an extremely friendly woman whose name we never caught. She had essentially turned the lower floor of her apartment into a hostel, with just two rooms and a bathroom. Despite this, she made us feel very welcome, always finishing with "my love". We would have probably thought that the hostel wasnt great if it wasn't for her and her pug, which Fran fell in love with.
On our second day there, we yet again met up with Ellie, Matilda and Natalie at the beach. We saw them a lot throughout our stay in Split. We decided on our third night there to go to "enter festival", a 3 day music festival on the main beach. We somehow managed to skip a massive queue for tickets and sneak in for free, and went in to find the majority of the dance floor was in the sea. It was just a few inches deep for about 50m as it was in a small cove. Amongst the crowd we found some very interesting characters. Most of the people looked like they had been at the beach all day, still in bikinis and swimming shorts, and very, very drunk. Ellie immediately started trying to have a dance off with one girl, "euro-dancing", who was oblivious to said competition. The next "character" we came across was a man that, let's just say, he was "excited" but completely oblivious, and proceeded to dance around, rolling around in the water, having the time of his life. Meanwhile, Ellie decided that she wanted to get up into the raised DJ booth, and was determined she would be waving at us when she got up there. However, she returned minutes later after being denied, despite claiming to be David Guetta's sister. An expensive drink later, we encountered a very attractive girl, dancing in a way I have never seen before. Her methods were so alternative, that it made it impossible for any of the four guys around her to get anywhere near her. She, like the excited man, also seemed like she was literally in a world of her own, and had obviously taken something.
The second hostel we stayed in was a studio apartment, located a little further from the harbour, down many narrow streets. We had a bedroom, bathroom a small kitchen to ourselves which we liked. After two nights with the others in bars on the harbour strip, we decided to take a boat trip for a day. For around 20 euros each it took us to two islands, and got us a meal with wine.
Our third hostel was a little closer to the centre, and was called Ana rooms. On arrival, we were greeted by a woman who spoke only german, who showed us to her living room, which was to be our room. When I say living room, I mean she had shifted the sofa to the side, and put a bed in. All of her cabinets were still full of glassware, family photos and ornaments, and the coffee table had a plastic sheet on it. Our stay here was summed up with the word awkward.
On our last night in Split, and our last night with the "pub crawl peeps", we decided, of course, to do a pub crawl. It started with a power hour in a very sweaty bar, where we met an australian girl called Kate (amongst other generic Americans and Australians). We then went to a few bars and ended up at a club which was on the beach. We had just arrived when one of a small group of girls took a dislike to the group, especially Fran and started the angry dancing in your face dance. At this point I felt the need to put myself between them, while an unspoken "beef" had arisen between Ellie, Natalie and said girl.
The next day, we were set to leave Split, destination Venice. This involved a train from Split to Zagreb, then a night train from Zagreb to Venice, on which we decided this time to save money and just reserve a seat instead of a bed.
