First proper day in NY so it's time to hit the big green woman! Literally not physically mind you.... First thing though was to figure out the subway system which took all of about 30 seconds - ridiculously simple and really easy to navigate which was a surprise. The streets are all numbered which makes it really easy for those of us who can count over 10...
The Statue of Liberty was pretty cool, there's a lot of copper in that thing! I couldn't get to the top as they only release a couple of hundred tickets a day and they sell out months in advance. Guess if I'd read the Lonely Planet a bit more carefully I might have known that!! Anyway, the smog is pretty bad and you can only see about 10 km's max so I don't think I missed much.
Went to the World Trade Centre memorial site next which is next to the site which is currently a construction zone with heaps of cops around. The magnitude of it only really hit when you see one of the only discovered glass fragments and it's as big as a baseball/cricket ball, Sitting next to that was one of the big girders from somewhere in one of the buildings - it looks like a half chewed and spat out twistie.
Wall St wasnt too spectacular apart from all the cops standing around protecting space, looking tough and of course eating. Every second cop I see, and thats a lot of cops as they are everywhere, is eating some form of fast food. I'm not game to take a picture of one of them stuffing their faces but I am very very tempted!! Maybe another day when I spot one with a doughnut!
Times Square is nuts, so much going on, lights and people everywhere. Apparently the theory goes that if you sit in the seats for 45 minutes then you are bound to see someone you know. Tried it and disproved the theory so I'm agreeing with you Pete! I am surprised I didn't see anyone I know - every 10 minutes or so there's an Aussie accent somewhere.
I tried the Macy's experience, not really my thing but it is pretty cheap. I did go to M&M world which was highly amusing as there was a fat kid with his head under one of the chutes. I wasnt quick enough to get a photo of him before security hauled him off - quite upsetting!!
Almost over the jetlag which is good.
