Haggis, Highlanders and Hairy Coos
Edinburgh pre trip - 2nd August 2009
This'll probably be a bloody long one, so go grab a cuppa, practise your skim reading and just relax…. OK so I just tried to post it, but off exploring didn't like it - I think its too long. So I'm going to have to do this in stages. Check back often as you probably wont get emails about it…
Wow, it seems like months ago we were in York, but it hasn't even been a week. I am lying back at the hostel in Edinburgh after a fairly relaxing day (Although the Brazilian drummers camped outside the hostel are going to make it difficult to sleep!!!) Recuperating after the crazy, mad, fun week that it has been.
We were greeted by beautiful weather in Edinburgh, just after lunch on Sunday and made our way up the massive hill to find our accommodation for the night. Relatively easy to find, although we were both stuffed after climbing the 100 or so steps, with our massive packs on, up to the 'Royal Mile' - Edinburgh's main tourist strip, which stretches from the Castle right down the hill for roughly a mile, hence the name! We checked in, dumped bags and went a wandering up the street. We didn't know at the time of booking everything that we were actually arriving at the beginning of the massive Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, so the place was crawling with tourists, gave a nice atmosphere to the city though. We looked through all the tourist shops and I started to count how many men in kilts I spotted (I did stop doing this after I got to 10 in about as many minutes). Dan and I were also both in need of rain jackets, as we were sure that the unpredictable UK weather was bound to follow us some more. We spotted some £10 jobs in souvenir shops and were quickly the proud owners of some Scotland rain jackets. After lunch and shopping we headed on a stroll down to a supermarket to get some supplies for dinner. We made a quick stop at an ATM to cash up for the next week, and as I approached the beeping machine I looked down to spot £40 just sitting in it waiting to be taken. So I did. I looked up and down the street and spotted no one hurriedly making their way back to the ATM. I did my own withdrawals and I thought I should wait in case someone came back to claim it - my guilty conscience was kicking in. After 15 minutes of waiting, no one returned so we went and bought dinner with it!!! Money for nothing - I'm not complaining. Although the funny side of it, is that there was a homeless bum begging no less than a meter away from it, if only he got off his arse to investigate the beeping, he might've been able to feed himself and his dog for a week! We ended up just cooking dinner and chilling out at the hostel for the rest of the night.
