Me and Will arrived in Sydney without Olly and Ed who stayed in Singapore before going via Kuala Lumpar for differing reasons. Having got lost trying to find our hostel and walking for a total of 45 minutes due to the Aussies naming two completely different and unlinked roads "Pitt Street' we checked into our pricey but extremely nice hostel called Wake Up, so called because every morning they bellow this message out of the speakers in the dorms along with some other annoying piece of info! Not something you want to hear when extremely tired and hungover. The hostel was massive, a total of 500 beds. It boasted its own cafe, very good and cheap downstairs bar turn nightclub and a travel booking and information desk as well as internet cafe.
We arrived very early morning so slept all day. We got up late the next and headed for the harbour to do all the standard Sydney sightseeing that you all already know without ecen being there. The girls; Sarah Lawson and her friends (Katie, Livi, Claire, Em and Emma) arrived over the next 2 days as well as Ed and Olly.
In our time in Sydney we checked out both Bondi and Manly beach. Bondi is like you'd expect; massive, great sand, good surf and jammed full of tourists. Manly is similar but not as busy and very appropriately described as LA Fitness by Olly due to the seemingly obligatory jogging and general gym activities that go on there. Both were good fun though.
Over the course of the week we also checked out the Aquarium which is worth a visit; dont have to describe it realy to be honest, you know what goes on there. The Centre Point tower managed to blow Ed's image of Syndey as a very compact place, all centred round a small harbour with a big bridge (he was somehow dissapointed with Sydney Harbour Bridge and believed the Opera house to be three times its actual size). It gave us a better idea of the layout of the city and managed to destroy any bearings I had as for where certain parts of the city lay.
On our lst day we watched the Red Bull Flugtag which is for those a little more our senior is when contestants are invited to build a 'flying machine' and launch themselves off a 6m high platform into the water. It was an amusing spectacle in the Aussie sunshine.
As a whole we had a great time in Sydney and you can see its attractiveness to people around the globe. Good weather all year round, the Asutralian people are very friendly (other than the odd ****) and the city is very picturesque. However it is very pricey and the week did burn a hole in all of our wallets. Much more than Paris did when I was there in September/October. Definately a place we agreed we could go and live at some point.
We can't finish this blog without a huge thanks to Pam Benson who took us out for a fabulous lunch on the harbour as well as a little tour of the parts of Sydney we had yet to see in her car. Thanks is also very much in order to Will's brother Archie's godfather Edward, his wife Jo and kids Georgie and Nick who took us for a tour of the harbour on their boat and out for supper afterwards.
