Hi Guys,
The last couple of days have been spent seeing some amazing sites mixed in with quite a lot of driving. We left Queenstown to head towards Milford Sound thinking that we'd stay there for the night. We made excellent time getting down there and once there went on a ferry around the mountains (Milford Sound is essentially a collection of incredible mountains that come directly out of the sea - google image it, it's very beautiful).
The ferry lasted an hour and 45 minutes and was great - both of us getting a bit photo happy, snapping away almost constantly until the ferry moved underneath the largest waterfall in Milford Sound. We were at the front of the ferry along with about 20 other people at the time, all of whom ran inside leaving the two of us to get drenched...
There's not much to do in Milford Sound apart from the ferry so we thought we'd get as far back to Queenstown as possible. We ended up past it in a small town called Wanaka, where we stayed in a conservation campsite next to a lake. The next morning we had a bath in the lake which was absolutely freezing before heading off towards Franz Fox (glacier).
This is basically a massive chunk of ice in the middle of mountains which has been there since teh ice age (although much smaller now!). We decided now to go on a trek over teh ice but did take a walk right upto it's edge which was pretty impressive. Again there is not too much to do there other than see the glacier so we decided to get on driving and ended up in greymouth on the West Coast. Here we thought we'd treat ourselves to a meal out (after continous pasta for the last few days) so went to an Indian. First impressions werenm't great with a lopsided taj mahal picture on the wall, neon lights and a waiter wearing brand new football boots with shirt and suit trousers. This brought endless amusement throughout thewhole meal. Despite our initial concerns had a really nice meal.
We went to a campsite to find an pitch right by the beach accompanied by an amazing sunset...the pictures say it all (alhtough we have spared you from the 100 others that we took of it!).
We spent a lazy morning there and then drove to Hanmer Springs which is also in the mountains. We played a ridiculously competivie game of crazy golf (which Ben won). We're about to cook dinner - but are branching out with risotto tonight.
Speak soon, hope you like the photos!!
Lots of love Ben and Katie xxxx
