11 March - We arrived in Noosa. Noosa is a really nice, upmarket seaside town. There are lots of boutique shops and posh restaurants in the town and the beach is beautiful.
We stayed in the YHA hostel which is in an old "Queenslander" (huge wooden building with lots of verandahs). Our room was really basic with no air con or bathroom but the building was lovely with lots of comfy chairs to relax in the evening. It felt like staying in someone's house.
We mainly went to the beach in the day and chilled or swam in the sea. Noosa is meant to be one of the safest beaches in Australia but the waves were still really big and powerful and kept knocking me over and dragging me under the water!
One day we booked a surf lesson with world champion Merrick Davis (no relative!). Ben did really well and stood up on the surf board but I couldn't stand and kept falling off! The current was so strong it was hard enough walking out to sea with the surf board and a couple of times I got knocked over by a wave and the surf board got knocked out of my hands. It was really good fun but really hard work too! In the afternoon we went kayaking along the Noosa river. After a wrong turn we got slightly lost and ended up being stuck in the sand in the middle of the river. We had gone past all of the houses by the river and now all we could see were mangroves and bushes along the river bank and I was expecting a crocodile to jump out at us at any minute! Eventually, after lots of hard work, we found our way back to the start. What with the surfing and kayaking this ending up being the most knackering day ever and the next day we ached like mad!
The following day Ben hired a surf board and I hired a body board from our hostel. We were really beginning to get into the Aussie beach bum lifestyle! Ben did really well surfing and stood up loads but I gave up with the body board and just went in to swim. As the day went on the waves got bigger and bigger and I kept getting dragged under with them. One wave was so huge it was at least double Ben's height and the guy next to us on a body board exclaimed "oh f**k" as it came towards us! After that I just stuck to sunbathing!!
Next we move onto Brisbane for a week.
