Hi guys, here's what we got up to in San Francisco.
The first day we explored Chinatown and had Dim Sum for dinner for mum and dad to try.
The next day was mum's birthday so I woke her up with chocolates and champagne! Then we went for a walk in the Japanese tea gardens. Next we explored some of San Francisco's neighbourhoods. First we went to Haight Ashbury which is the hippy area, next we went to the Castro which is the gay area and then we went to the Mission which is the old Spannish area where we saw the oldest building in San Francisco and lots of murals on the walls. In the evening we went to a posh seafood restaurant for mum's birthday and had the best meal of our whole trip. After that it was back to the room for some whiskey and cokes and to play some black jack - Las Vegas really rubbed off on us!
The next day we did a winery tour of California's wine country, the Napa and Sanoma valleys. First stop was Muir woods where all the big redwood trees are. Next was our first winery (yes it was before midday!) which was gorgeous. It was a really hot sunny day, perfect for wine tasting! We learnt some more about the art of wine tasting and got to try some really nice wines. Next stop was another winery and then we had a BBQ lunch in Sanoma town. After lunch we stopped at another winery for more wine tasting! On the way back we stopped at a really cute seaside town called Sausilito. We had a wonder round and then got the ferry back to San Francisco. On the ferry we got some great views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
On our last day with mum and dad we did a tour of Alcatraz. It was a really foggy, cold day which made Alcatraz look even more creepy! The tour was so interesting. It was an audio tour told by ex prison guards and inmates and told stories of past escape attempts. We even saw the cell where Al (scarface) Capone was imprisoned.
When mum and dad left we checked out of our nice hotel into a cheaper one which me and Ben could afford. Our new hotel was in the middle of a really scary part of town with loads of gangster looking people hanging around - me and Ben felt like we were about to be mugged or shot any minute! We also couldn't believe the number of crazy homeless people ranting on street corners. We've seen more poverty in America than in any other country we've visited.
We had a couple of days to explore more of the city centre and then left for Seattle.
