After we had brought forward the time of our shuttle to the airport by an hour, we arrived ready to check in, in plenty of time. It was lucky for us that we had asked for the shuttle an hour earlier as our flight time was now an hour earlier. So instead of 2:05pm take off, it was 1:05pm.
The flight was smooth and we arrived in Nadi late afternoon and waited at the airport for our pick up to take us to the hostel. As soon as we set foot off the plane we were greeted by 30 degree heat, it was like being back in Asia. If the heat reminded us of our time in South East Asia the roads and landscape did as well, as we avoided several huge pot holes, casual driving and pedestrians as we made our way to our accommodation, Aquarius on the Beach. As you can probably tell it is right on the beach and once we had checked in (which took a little longer than planned after a mix up with our room) we were soon sat with a cold drink, looking out across the beach, watching the sun go down, hello Fiji!
Our room was not quite what we had planned for our start to Fiji. We were booked into a 4 bed dorm, although there would only be the two of us staying in it. Therefore we had two sets of bunk beds in a room which was slightly run down. That said it had air - con, which was an unexpected bonus, so every cloud.
As we were now in Fiji, this meant no more carrying round a weeks supply of food on us and back to eating out again. We ate dinner at Aquarius and had another couple of drinks to celebrate our arrival and our second to last country on our trip.
Day two in Fiji, it was a nice sunny day and after having a bit of a lie in, we got up, got ready and then headed out towards the pool area. Sat lookng out onto the beach, Fijian music playing and a cool sea breeze is what you would probably expect from the South Pacific, it is for us anyway. Then out of no where, the Fijian music stopped and was replaced with some christmas hits, which felt a bit strange.
After having something to eat by the pool, we headed just off the terrace and claimed a couple of hammocks on the beach. These were alot harder to get into than we first thought. As I have the leg advantage I didn't do too badly, but for Belle it was a bit more of a struggle. The graceful manor on which she hopped onto her horse had deserted her, but after nearly falling out a couple of times and a couple of screams she was on. We sat there realxing, taking in the surroundings.
After a little while we decided to take a dip and cool off a bit. This again was easy said than done as when we got to the sea, it was not as cool and refreshing as we had hoped. It was warm, something that although we experienced in South East Asia, I don't think we would ever get used to, no matter how many times we went in it. After a brief dip it was back to the hammocks and sun loungers for some more rays. Belle is having a competition with her friend Natalie (who we met in Singapore) and who ever goes home the brownest (out of the two of them) wins a beer, so she has well and truely got her game face on.
We decided that we should go and have a little walk around the area to see what it was like, so we left the hostel and headed up the road. Once at the end of the road we discovered that there wasn't really much around so we walked a little bit further before turning for home. Not the most productive walk but at least we tried, we also forgot what it was like to be in hot sun all the time, South East Asia seems a life time ago now.
In the evening we ventured a couple of doors down from our accommodation to get something to eat. It was at another hotel on the same strip as ours and to be quite honest, seemed nicer than the one we had chosen, ah well. We had dinner outside, again over looking the beach and watching the sun set with a cold drink before heading back to our room, so we could pack and make sure everything was ready for the following day and our trip to one of the Islands.
The following day we were up bright and early and checked out, ready for our bus to pick us up at 7:00am in order to travel across to our next destination, Octopus Island.
